phers, and glassing in the hilly terrain of this big pasture for an hour or more when I spotted the badger. She was way up on a big hillside about half a mile away and was traversing the hill at a pretty good clip, moving to the right. I knew if I tried to drive the Mule closer she’d spook and beat feet for sure. It was time for a plan! Grabbing the Walk- about, I took off at a trot (that’s probably pretty optimistic) with Maggie in tow and tried to pull a fl anking maneuver on the badger using some intervening high ground for cover. I managed to close the distance to about 200 or so yards but the badger was nowhere to be seen on the hillside, which was probably a good thing as I was pretty winded. I moved farther right to a fence line and sat down with the dog to just watch and wait a while. Lo and behold, after about five minutes the badger emerged from behind a big clump of sagebrush. The Spartan Walkabout 223 came up almost without thought and the crosswire settled quickly. At the shot, the big female instantly collapsed as the 40-gr. Ballistic Tip impacted right on the money. The Walkabout had chalked up its fi rst badger! Almost as quickly, Maggie was on the badger and you could hear the bones cracking as the powerful little Heeler dog shook the dickens out of the carcass. I swear Maggie had badger breath for at least a couple of days and didn’t stop smiling for a week. TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 2011 - DAY 25 - JOURNAL NOTE

6720 Coyote out today with the good ammo and had a ball! Follow-up shots are quick, and with the gusty wind that was a big plus. The combination of the fast cycling action and the 4.5-14x Leupold scope with Varmint Hunter reticle, make for quick and accurate follow-up shots. Wind blowing hard enough that I’m holding off at or near the 20 mph dot of the reticle. I can see why my friend Jeff Hartline is wedded to his 223 AR for varmint shooting. But man, this thing goes through ammo! NOSLER CUSTOM TROPHY GRADE VARMINT AMMUNITION

an assortment of factory ammunition and some handloads before embarking for the West in 2011. I was so impressed with the performance of the 223 40-gr. Ballistic Tip load from Nosler that I arranged to have a case of it shipped to me in Zortman. Counting some left over from testing, I had more than 400 rounds of this Nosler Custom Varmint ammunition which I used exclusively in the 223 Walkabout rifl e for walking the dog towns and gopher fi elds. Groups on paper with this load

were consistently under 0.75" and the velocity was slightly over an honest 3,700 fps from the Walkabout’s 20-inch Bergara barrel. Performance in the fi eld was spectacular in both the accuracy and terminal effect departments. The Walkabout has a 2.5-8x Leupold optic mounted on it (part of the “making weight” project) so the dogs, and es- pecially the gophers, usually looked farther away than they actually were. Quite frankly, it seemed if you could see the little varmints well enough to get a good sight picture on them you just pressed the trigger and were im- mediately rewarded with a spectacular hit. Sighted in to print 1 inch high at 100 yards, the Nosler Custom Varmint 40- gr. BT load was good to go out to about 275 yards with no holdover at all on upright critters. It seemed that almost every time I thought a dog or gopher
