This organizer will need to be movable, within easy
reach on the left side of my press, but easily stowed away when not in use. First thing to accomplish was to make a sketch. Like we used to say as pilots, plan your flight and fly your plan. My sketch would not be of much use to the reader as the equipment you use will vary from mine. However, I recommend anyone wanting to make a similar bench orga- nizer make a sketch. One of the challenges is to keep the design within a
reasonable footprint – not so small it makes it hard to access items, and certainly no larger than needed. After carefully laying out all of the items to include on this organizer, it was determined the best size would be 75/8" x 125/8". If you plan to make one, your size will be dictated by the items you want to include. Three-quarter inch plywood would make a nice base, so a trip to the local lumber yard was in order. A partial piece of ¾" thick plywood was purchased. From this piece, two smaller pieces were cut, each measuring 75/8" x 125/8". Now on to the fabrication process. First I double-
checked to make sure everything would fit in the space al- located. Yep, it will. So far so good. Like all good carpenters say, measure twice and cut once. Can’t argue with that logic. The organizer was arranged to include a back-splash
made from the ¾" plywood. This will afford a place to hang wrenches and a small wood extension shelf at the top to mount my powder measure. All pieces will be screwed together with appropriate
length wood screws. The back-splash was screwed onto the back edge of the base. Later, the top corners of the back-splash
will be cut and sanded with a radius. Next was to lay out some items on the base. The electronic scale to the right side. All the allen wrenches, tweezers, screwdriver, locator pins, and powder trickler would be mounted in holes drilled in a 2" x 4" located to the left of the scale. It is important to position the trickler with the discharge tube above the powder pan. The edging material around the scale and bullet corral will be made from ½" x ¾" trim material. It is important to pilot drill the ½" x ¾" trim material and the base board from the bottom in order to prevent splitting. Use care in planning the screw hole depth so you do not drill all of the way through the trim material. By screwing the trim pieces on from the bottom, the screw heads won’t be visible. Lightly pencil mark the location of all of the holes for
the items you want mounted in the 2" x 4" block. All holes must be carefully drilled, which can be done with a hand drill. However, if you have a drill press it makes everything much easier. For mounting the allen wrenches, choose different diameter drill bits and vary the hole depths according to each wrench length. After marking holes for the allen wrenches I determined they would interfere with operating my powder trickler so I relocated them into two rows. The most critical hole for my organizer is the one for
the powder trickler, which required a 2" hole. I made this hole first just in case I messed up, but luck was with me and I was able to position this hole close to the end of the 2" x 4" without a problem. Don’t drill the trickler hole all the way through – just deep enough to get the wanted height for the discharge tube above the powder pan.
