TAC21 Review — A Bolt Action AR Al Voth


like, you don’t have to use your imagi- nation any longer. A company called Modular Driven Technologies (MDT) has created something closer to a bolt- action AR than any other product I’ve seen. However, I will acknowledge that since the system uses a Remington 700 as the heart of the rifl e, that moniker is still a bit of a stretch. But the bolt-action AR image is more descriptive of it than anything else I can think of. MDT calls their unit a chassis

system because, like a car’s chassis, everything attaches to it, including the barreled action, buttstock, pistol grip, scope and bipod. Install all of those parts (ensuring the action is a Remington 700) and you’ll have a rifl e that will turn heads at the range and deliver consistent accuracy. This chassis system is called the


TAC21 and while it’s available to fi t both the long and short Remington actions, I received mine in the short version. My first impression on opening the box was that the build quality is high. That opinion hasn’t changed. It’s machined from solid billets of aluminum and an- odized to a Mil Spec type III standard. Bolts, screws and pins are all quality pieces and where a screw goes into alu- minum, Heli-coil inserts are present to prevent galling and increase service life. I couldn’t fi nd a single stray machining mark or a defect in quality. This is as good as it gets. Like other manufacturers (includ-


ing Ruger® and their Gunsite Scout rifl e), when MDT chose to add a de- tachable magazine, they went with the Accuracy International pattern. My ver- sion in 223 Remington can be used with either fi ve- or ten-round magazines, and I’ve used the larger size exclusively with nothing but perfect feeding performance to report. For a while I even had a bar- reled action in 204 Ruger installed and the same magazine worked fi ne with that round as long as I limited capacity to around seven cartridges. The author called these two coyotes while standing behind this large round bale and using it as an improvised bench rest. After these two went down, a third peeked over a ridge at 212 yards. He ended up as dead as these two.
