CZ's new bolt action rimfire allows the shooter to convert their rifle to a new caliber in just minutes.

The CZ 455 retains the accuracy and quality that have made CZ rimfire models favorites with shooters, both in the woods and in competition.

Also available in a .22 LR/.17 HMR 2 barrel combo package.

Creedmoor, 6.8x43 SPC, 300 Rem., or the new 338 Federal, all address the factor of what a hunter is carrying in combined weight of gun and ammunition in the fi eld. Many of the AR systems today with all the bells and whistles tacked onto them tend to become a bit heavy and cumbersome to haul around. The DPMS Hunter is not in that class at all. The stock on this rifl e has a forearm that is composite in construction (carbon fi ber) and a butt stock that is cut away and skeletonized to keep rifl e weight down. No rails for lights and other added gadgets here, just straightforward features that are used by hunters. Sling swivel studs are standard, and the upper is a fl at top design that makes use of the Weaver rail system for fast, accurate scope installation. No battle sights here, and no Weaver forearm attachment rails either. With a fi ve-round magazine required in many states for big game hunting, this rifl e is fi eld ready right out of the box … less a scope sight. I found the DPMS a real gem to get up and functioning.

On the second day of our hunt we set out in a 4x4 pickup truck to take on some rockchucks on a mountain trail. I was carrying a Nitrex binocular from Federal, and in effect, the glasses did my walking for me in many cases while I was within yards of the truck. As a fi rst target I located a fat ’chuck on a rock outcrop-

ping some 200 yards downrange. With no wind in the deep canyon, the shot was an easy one. Setting the Sightron scope at 10 power, the 70-grain Federal PT found its mark on the yellow rockchuck. With good balance, a great two-stage trig- ger, and the truck as a rest, the shot was not even noteworthy. However, a second rockchuck was a stretch at about 300 yards and proved a better test for the 70-grain bullet. It struck home and ended the career of another grass-eating rodent. Tack on several fast moving jackrabbits and a pile of

prairie dogs, as well as rockchucks, and the new DPMS Hunter accounted for almost 500 rounds of 243 ammo over the three-day test period. I didn’t run the gun without cleaning or anything in the high stress department like that. In fact, the rifl e was fi eld stripped and cleaned with each 100 or so rounds sent down the bore. This rifl e was going to become a member of the family, and as such I had no intention of burn- ing up a barrel with needless displays of massive fi repower, or even allowing the well-tuned action to pick up excess grit, thereby causing unneeded stress and metal wear. For the most part, the DPMS 243 was treated just like I handle my own equipment, in that cleaning is a very important part of the overall maintenance and use associated with shooting autoloading rifl es. By late summer the rifl e was being tested with deer

loads as we had a major cull hunt in central Butte County, South Dakota, coming up. The wind-bucking 243 Win. was now about to become a big game harvesting fi eld tool. Over the course of two weeks’ time the rifl e harvested two antelope and three whitetail without a hitch. You could say that in the fi nal analysis this new rifl e by DPMS is a “one gun, do it all” system on many hunting fronts. SAVAGE PREDATOR MEETS THE NEW NORMA 22-250 55-GRAIN ORYX
