Financial crisis – someone tell the airlines!
As part of its aggressive
expansion strategy it’s setting up an offshore premium airline with a base in either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. While this unfolds, we eagerly

What a great industry we work in, it’s so dynamic how the airline business and its suppliers continuously reinvent themselves, I’m thinking of what’s
happening in our Asia Pacific region, where, over the past few short months we’ve heard that Qantas will soon have 12 A380s in service and are currently refurbishing eight of their great 747 workhorses. Lounge facilities are increasing
in importance as Qantas improves facilities in Singapore and Hong Kong and almost trebles the size of the LAX First and Business lounges – despite well publicised losses of around $200m in its international business there’s no question that Qantas has a clear strategy to grow.
“Australia’s two big domestic airlines, Qantas and Virgin Australia, are going head to head and the big winners are the travelling public”
await more news of Singapore Airlines’ plans to launch the new no-frills, low-fare airline operating widebody aircraft on medium- and long-haul routes, commencing in 2012 with initial destinations suggested to include China, India, Africa, the Middle East and America. This new airline is seen as a
direct threat to Qantas-owned Jetstar, which is itself rapidly expanding. It will also, no doubt, affect AirAsiaX, as we wait to find out more about the recent plans for a share swap that would give AirAsia’s parent a 20 percent stake in its rival, the national carrier Malaysia Airlines. Australia’s two big domestic airlines, Qantas and Virgin Australia, are going head-to-head and the big winners are the travelling public. Both carriers have improved their premium offering, with changes to premium seating, priority bording and on many routes a new meal service – good news from a humble caterer’s point of view! Domestically, Virgin Australia
continues its attack on Qantas with upgraded lounges and offering Qantas frequent flyers the same status membership to tempt business travellers. Qantas of course, has amazing resilience and will not take this lying down!
