NETWORKING GALORE
More than 20 educational seminars broken into tracks de- livered the know-how attendees sought at KnowledgeFest. For Justin Everson, salesman and manager at Extreme Audio in Mechanicsville, Va., the ‘Expert Qualification’ track presented by Del Ellis was a highlight, because it stressed techniques that could be used to effectively close sales. “It’s a lot of things I heard last year and didn’t take notes, and they slipped my mind,” Everson said. This year, he was armed with pen and pad, jotting down ideas about how those “little tidbits” that could make all the difference back at his shop. “It was good last year, and it was even better this year,” Ever-
son said. “I went to all of the sales tracks. To tell you the truth, they were all great. The one I got 100 percent was Del Ellis’ Expert Qualification workshop. The way he puts things in perspective, it makes sense.” Everson began implementing the concepts he acquired at KnowledgeFest right away. “Small things like when someone walks in, ‘shake their hand, walk
them out to their car when they leave,” he said. Tell them the price is ‘only’ $225.” Informal chats with fellow retailers were just as valuable, according to Joshua Landau of JML Audio in Fenton, Mo. The industry vet said he took a lot away from the tracks but informal information was just as interesting and relevant. “Honestly, a lot of what we get out of KnowledgeFest is not only at the actual tracks, but in the hallways or in the after-hours,” Landau said. “KnowledgeFest gives us a chance to talk with other owners, to talk about something that may have worked for them. It’s great to have presenters but it’s also great to talk to other stores and see how they handle something,” he added. Landau said creating a network with other installers can ben- efit on “something as simple as the style of the business card, to how they handle the phones, to how their business is laid out,” he added.
Among the most talked-about seminars was ‘Navigating the Internet’ with Al & Ed Autosound’s product man-
