(or other leather) in place when it dries. ANOTHER PACK

At the SHOT show in Orlando in 2009 I ran into Bill

Palazzolo of California Competition Works. Knowing my affi nity for walking and shooting varmints, he showed me what was then his new Column Sling Bag. The Column is a tallish shoulder bag with a double,

two-way, zippered access panel running the full length of what is actually the front of the pack. When open, the interior of the pack is fully exposed and, for lack of a better descrip- tion, is much like a big trough. Around the inside of the body of the pack are four nylon mesh zippered pockets to help keep track of small stuff. Dimensions of the main compart- ment are roughly 5" x 5" x 23" tall for a volume of 575 cubic inches. There are two exterior pockets on the front of the Column Pack which add about another 200 cubic inches of volume. There are four hidden side pockets, two on each side of the bag. Volumewise, these side pockets are big enough to hold two M16/AR-15 magazines each or other similarly sized objects. All the exterior pockets have man-sized zipper pulls. Inside of the main compartment fl ap there is a small fl at mesh zippered pocket that is an ideal place for a hunting license and there also is a handy clip for keys. As this is written, I’ve used the Column Sling Bag for

two years and on two long summer varmint hunting trips. The thing I like most about this rig is that it allows me to carry a slung rifl e across my back. The angle at which the pack rides complements the angle of the rifl e when slung

comfortably over my shoulder across my back. Having only one wide and comfortable shoulder strap, which I put over my left shoulder, there is no shoulder strap to interfere with the rifl e sling on the right side. I’ve used the Column Pack mostly on short jaunts

away from the truck or Mule, and have found it has more than enough carrying capacity for a half-day outing in the varmint fi elds. The interior and outer pockets make gear
