is either retrieving the animal (confi rmed) or relying on the spotter’s veracity (unconfi rmed). The rifl es I use are a .223 FCP-K Savage, .204 Rem. XR

100, .22-250 Rem. fully accurized, and a 6-284 wildcat (and soon a 6.5-284 F Class Savage). Each one is used for different distances as they are “zeroed” differently. Needless to say, I take more than I really need, but what does need have to do with it? And, I drive to my hunting areas, so I just load up the Suburban and go. As to scope power versus mirage, I am one of those

guys who thinks you can never have too much power. Like you can never be too rich or too pretty. I adhere to the rule of thumb of at least four power for every 100 yards you want to shoot. Now I know this will bring some scorn and protest, but consider that with a prairie dog you are shooting at some- thing 11 inches tall and 3 inches wide, and a groundhog is about 14 inches tall and 5 inches wide. Not something 6 feet by 2 feet or an elk or whitetail. I opt for the power because I can always crank it down. But, I cannot crank it up if it is not there. I am old and slow so I take advantage of the additional edge more power offers and without apology as I recognize my shortcomings. I live in New Jersey, debatably the most over-regulated

gun and hunting state in the union. I do not see too many groundhogs here. Occasionally, I might get an invitation to do some groundhog renovation/removal/remodeling at a local golf club that closes one of its courses to let us safely and effi ciently rid them of the nuisance. However, that shooting is generally with a .22 LR rimfi re or .22 rimfi re magnum, and

shots are at 60 +/- yards as the groundhogs are accustomed to seeing golfers and they allow you to get that close. I just do not personally relate to that, and in New Jersey you can- not use anything larger than a .22 caliber to shoot. I think the state has not realized what a .204 is and how far it can reach. But that is another topic of discussion.
