that the flat-nose profile pushed a slightly wider path through the medium when compared to the factory round, but trav- eling only 3¾ inches deep and expanding to a diameter of 0.334 inch.
Looking at the results, the depth of penetration wasn’t
terribly impressive, but the change in expansion from the fac- tory bullet to the modified hollow-point resulted in enough damage to the wax medium that I feel it’s worth the extra effort to modify some mid-level match ammunition and try it in your squirrel rifle. While sorting through the other ammunition for this Want to win?
Sierra MatchKing bullets are used by more shooting champions at more long-range matches than any other rifle bullet in the world. In fact, 49 out of 60 NRA Hi-Power Rifle Champions used MatchKing bullets in 2010 to win at Camp Perry and 105 out of 151 champions used them at the 2010 NRA Silhouette Nationals.
MatchKing’s hollow point Boat Tail design provides that extra margin of ballistic performance match shooters need at long range, under adverse conditions.

section, I came across a few unopened boxes of the CIL Ca- nuck standard velocity ammunition. As my best guess, they looked to be from the ‘60s, and upon opening one of the boxes I found the grease lubrication to be completely dried and a lead oxide in the form of white bumps had covered the bul- lets’ surface. The white clumps were hard to the touch, but could be crushed between my fingernails. At the time, I saw the ammunition being sold as a collector’s item on the Internet for $15 per box, but I figured it was made to be shot, so why deprive the ammunition from its intended destiny. I also was curious as to how and if it would shoot. But I sure didn’t fancy the idea of shooting this ammunition down my barrel in its current condition. Running the ammunition through the D- Rock body die would remove the old grease and lead oxide from the bearing surface of the bullet, allowing me to re-lube the ammunition and see if there was any improvement. I started with the body die inverted in the press, and I
slowly pushed the round down into the die, carefully shaving off the white lead oxide bumps, leaving a clean lead bullet. After sizing 50 rounds, they were then re-lubed with SPL rimfire bullet lube. A light dab of SPL between my thumb and index finger, and the bullets had a fresh coat of waxy lubrication that dried a few moments after application. Since I had no intention of using these for any kind of
hunting, I tested the ammunition only for accuracy at 50 yards with the longer Anschutz match barrel. I didn’t see much need to run the same test in the short barrel since the Anschutz barrel had proven to be the more accurate of the two. CiL CanuCk aCCuraCy testing
The first thing I want to say about testing the CIL am-
munition is that safety glasses are always a good idea when shooting. I’ve been an avid Oakley fan for a number of years, and again on that day of testing, I was reminded why I like them so much. After shooting the first two fouling rounds, I received a face full of burnt powder and debris as the rim of the third round ripped open and blew part of the case’s contents down the inside of the bolt body and out the back. It surprised me, and looking at the bullet strike which was about four inches low from the main group, I figured it was a bad case and continued testing. By the fifth blasting of my face, I was sure of two things.

One, my safety glasses were indeed performing well, and two, this ammunition really wasn’t safe. The case rims were blowing out in different directions and the bullets were strik- ing wildly on the target. But, when the case did not blow out, there were some very interesting groups on paper. Even with these problems, I still wanted to finish the test.
