a uniform bullet diameter is one of the aspects that helps improve accuracy of lower grade ammunition, and I guessed it would be just the thing to try. Something else I noticed about the

Vostok ammunition was that the bullets were very dry, with little if any lubrica- tion. I didn’t want to run the bullets into the body die in that condition, so I used the same SPL lubrication and lubed up 50 bullets before sizing, and then again after. I could feel the pressure of seat- ing some of the oversized rounds, and it required a safe and easy motion with the press arm to prevent the bullet from tipping off center as it entered the die. I used the fl at-nose punch to press the bullets against the body die’s walls to ensure a uniform diameter. VOSTOK ACCURACY TESTING Starting out with the factory am-
munition, I patiently worked my way through five different boxes to find enough ammunition with bullet diam- eters small enough to chamber in the test rifl e. This meager collection allowed for a 10-shot fouling group and then the subsequent pair of 10-shot accuracy groups. The fouling group was pretty ugly, much like the CIL factory am- munition, but once the Anschutz match barrel was either properly fouled or at least convinced that there was no other option but to fi nish the test, the groups were not half bad. The fi rst group was 0.560 inch, and the second group mea- sured 0.685 inch. Not terrible if one could ignore the issue of needing to fi nd which rounds actually fi t the chamber. Actually, it’s still terrible. Trying to force a loaded round into the chamber is just nonsense, so to me this was a “must do” to salvage the ammunition. Moving on to the modifi ed am-
munition, I was expecting to see some improvement, but much to my surprise I was confronted by some very question- able performance. While the modifi ed ammunition did fi t into the chamber easily, and the fl at-nose bullets did cut some clean, round holes on the target, the problem was that they were all spread out instead of collecting around a common aiming point. In short, the groups were terrible. The most pro- nounced issue with the Vostok’s poor grouping was the excessive vertical stringing. The two groups measured 0.960 inch and 1.15 inches; not very good considering where it was before
modifi cation. It appeared that the fl at- nose bullet, much like the other stan- dard velocity rounds, was sensitive to the slightest wind changes and drifted around on the target. I did like the fact that all the modi-
fi ed rounds fi t into the chamber, but in the future I feel it would be better to leave the bullet as a round nose basic target round. If the vertical stringing could be reduced, I think this simple tool could be used to save some of the Russian over-sized rimfi re rounds. CONCLUSION
Overall, I believe the D-Rock Bul-
let Modification System works very well. The wider and deeper hollow- point cavities created with the punches transferred more energy through greater and faster expansion, occurring within the fi rst few inches of the test medium, when compared to the factory bullet designs. For just about any varmint hunter, this is a handy improvement on squirrels and smaller targets. The flat-nose modifications in-
crease the initial impact of the bullet and result in a wide and deep bullet channel – perfect for larger critters like jackrabbits and raccoons. Its abil- ity to salvage rimfi re ammunition still remains in question, but I believe that with some fi ne tuning it could be just the tool for the job. The D-Rock Bullet Modifi cation
System is not the fi rst type of product like this to hit the market, but by far it has the best machine work and is very simple to use. I like the safety in using an arbor with this tool, and during all the work with loaded rounds, I did not have a single safety issue. Smooth and slow motions are the best way to work with tools of this type, and as stated before, safety glasses are not optional.
