by many groups with one hole and several signifi cant fl iers. When I fi nally got smart enough to interpose a folded towel between gun and bag, things improved markedly but, by then, we already had fi red most of the test loads. I wonder after looking at these data and comparing

to the earlier results if I should not retest the loads using Hodgdon propellants with the milder Remington 6½ primer. Otherwise, I am satisfi ed that we have found reasonable top loads with enough accuracy for any varminting application. Williamson is satisfi ed with the accuracy and any of several loads tested certainly will deliver minute-of-prairie-rat per- formance for shots far beyond what many shooters would consider feasible with any 17-caliber gun. While this testing was far from complete, it did show

that the standard 10-twist barrel will stabilize the unusually long 25-grain Hornady V-Max (when used at 6,300 feet eleva- tion at about 60 degrees F). Nevertheless, based upon reports of others having accuracy issues with this bullet in 10-twist guns, I would suggest a 9½ twist for those who often hunt near sea level in cold weather. Safe beats sorry 100 percent of the time. I suspect that Pac-Nor and others will make such a barrel. The readily available 9 twist is unnecessarily fast but the extra spin will not harm much. This testing also showed that the early reamer design,

which has an entirely too-long neck section (it is impossible to seat bullets to come anywhere near to touching the rifl ing), will still produce good accuracy. The new reamer design resolves this problem and other issues.

Based upon preliminary testing with this gun and in

a barrel that I chambered using the new reamer but that had terrible pitting in the leade area (discovered only after I had otherwise fi nished it!), I am quite certain that the new reamer design will afford easier-to-achieve accuracy and that it will approximately duplicate the performance of the chamber tested here. As soon as I can do so, I will chamber another barrel using the new reamer. In any case, I expect
