This was easily accomplished with a light application of fi ne emery cloth. ATTACHING THE LIGHT
I’ve found several ring mounts for
attaching lights to scope rails that seem to meet my needs. They all are similar in function and, if they are not actually a scope ring, they closely resemble one. Most any quick release scope ring that will fi t the light’s body and attach to a Weaver- or Picatinny-type rail will fulfi ll this function. I have used QR scope rings for 1 inch tubes from Warne, Wilson, and Leupold with equal success. These are available at most gun shops nation- wide and are priced at around $75 to $80 per pair. This seems expensive but you need only one ring per light. The Vltor Scout Mount rings come
in three diameters to fit a variety of lights from 0.810" through 1.040" outside diameters. Designed for mounting on Picatinny or similar rails, these units secure via a triple-function thumb screw and cross bolt that attaches the mount to the rail and holds the light against recoil. Easily mounted and removed, these ring mounts allow for a quick switch from gun light to hand-held fl ashlight. Available from Brownells for only $34.95 each, these are a good option for hunters wanting to mount lights of varying diameters on their guns. For mounting lights on Picatinny
rails (like those AR-15 forearms or tacti- cal rifl e bases), there are many options. The simplest is to just clamp the light with the proper ring mount directly to the rail, as illustrated in the photo showing two AR mounted lights. If the light needs to be attached to a scope mount base, GG&G offers a mount al- lowing the user to change the location and angle of the mounted light. Daniel Defense, Double Star, Atlas Metal Parts, and Yankee Hill Machine all make rail mounts and they, and many more, can all be seen in the Brownells catalog. There is a bunch of ’em. A SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR SHOTGUNS Dedicated light mounts for shot-
guns which replace the forearm/slide are expensive and are not easily in- stalled or removed. The best, and sim- plest, shotgun mount I’ve found is from TacStar Shotgun Accessories (again, available from Brownells). TacStar’s Universal Flashlight
Mounts for shotgun barrels or maga- zine tubes are nothing more than two
stamped pieces of sheet steel joined by a couple of cap screws. Designed to sand- wich both the light and the mounting surface (barrel or magazine) between the two plates, this is a secure light mounting system that will not break the bank. Available in four different fl ashlight/barrel sizes, The Universal Flashlight Mounts sell for a very reason- able $21.98. Using a TacStar Universal Flash-
light Mount, I mounted my Leupold MX 221 LED Modular Flashlight to a Stoeger Arms Outback shotgun’s bottom barrel.
The light was oriented off to the left side somewhat so I could reach up and activate the light’s tail switch with my support hand thumb. I fi red both buck- shot and slug loads through the little 12 gauge with the light attached via the TacStar mount. Quite frankly, I did not expect this mounting system to hold up to the little shotgun’s recoil since, by most standards, the Leupold MX light is a bit on the heavy side as tacti- cal lights go, and the Outback’s recoil is not inconsequential. I was wrong about that! The Universal Flashlight Mount
