horizontal placement, and aside from a single fl ier in each group, the accuracy was what I had been used to seeing with the SGB round. The fi rst group mea- sured under a half-inch, and the second 10-shot group measured just over a half inch. Both of these groups were plenty accurate and I was impressed with the improvement from the modifi cation. Moving on to the Penetrator modi-

fi cation, the groups were also a big im- provement over the factory round. After ten rounds, the groups were ragged holes measuring just under and just above a half-inch in size. Like other tests, the fl iers in the ammunition still exist, but they didn’t seem to fl y out from the group quite as far. Again, the bullet modifi cation improved the accuracy in the short barrel setup. On the second day of testing, the

longer Anschutz match barrel was in- stalled and after cleaning and fouling the barrel, I fi red the fi rst two 10-shot groups to evaluate the factory ammuni- tion. The fi rst group was an improve- ment over the short barrel, and the over- all measurement was comfortably under the one-inch mark. The second 10-shot group was just above a half-inch overall, and had very little vertical dispersion. Starting the next series of groups

with the modifi ed hollow-point bullets really impressed me. The fi rst group measured in the middle 0.3s with a lovely little cluster, and the second group was also promising with its sub half-inch measurement. For a varmint hunting round, this to me is about as good as it gets with such a simple change to the bullet. The last modifi cation of SGB to test

in the Anschutz match barrel was the Penetrator bullet. A few shooters online commented that the new tip gives it the appearance of an Eley EPS bullet, but it’s more of a consequence in developing the punch rather than an actual goal. It didn’t escape Derek that there was an uncanny resemblance to the EPS bul- let, but the primary goal was to make a better performing hunting round. That being said, on paper, there was an un- questionable improvement in accuracy. Like the hollow-point modifi cation, the Penetrator bullets printed round groups on the target and were either right at the half-inch mark or just under it. The fi rst 10-shot group produced an overall measurement in the 0.3s, matching an

excellent group from the hollow-point modifi cation. CCI SMALL GAME BULLET MEDIUM TESTING

On the third day I set up the wax

blocks and sent a few SGB bullets down range. As expected, the fl at-nose factory shape slams pretty hard into the wax blocks, causing the fi rst block to nearly crack in half. The level of penetration was also good, driving to an average

depth of four inches. When I removed the bullets from

the wax medium, right away I noticed the obvious similarity of the factory SGB bullets to the fl at-nose modifi ed Federal 712 and CCI Velocitor rounds. They all share the evenly fl attened front section of bullet and lack of fragmentation when passing through the medium. In many ways, if you have good results with the factory SGB round in your rifl e, then you
