as possible. Much like any major city in the States, Brisbane is big, cluttered, and has far too many people for me. Head north, however, and the whole world changes. Here is the real Australia, to my way of thinking. These local people on the cattle stations are salt of the earth, simple living, and smart as hell to survive this very rugged and at times dangerous land. They were eager to hear about the U.S. even with the national news at hand, and as the Aussies say, “… as the U.S. goes, so does Australia.” These folks have never let us down in war and they remember well that when the rising sun was at their doorstep we were there backing them up as well with our real guns. It’s too bad some city folks down there have tended to forget about all that history when it comes to current gun laws. During WW II the Japanese indicated that they would never attack America directly because there was a gun behind every bush across the coun- try. Casualties would be unacceptable in the event of a military mainland attack in America. While Australia has a good school program for youth military type training, the gun situation leaves them a bit light in a country that for the most part lives by the gun in the outback. At times when entering a cattle

station, the family would set out the “barbie” and pack on some fresh pork, eggs, and toast for a morning’s break- fast. Just being friendly, you could say, and it was obvious that these were just flat out great folks. While one outfit was raising dogs and even a deer or two as fawns in the house, another was sitting atop luxury and opulence. However, in both examples the hospitality was overwhelming and it was good to spend time with all these great people. At one point I watched the eyes of a stockman turn glazed and very sad at the word of the death of a small kid goat in his pasture. These people are close to the land and seem to care about everything in their environment. I have to say, even being from a rural western state myself, I envied them in some ways. The big misTake

of Marc’s grinding across a narrow two- track trail that first day out of Brisbane, my world of hunting was set on its ear by an event that will be followed up in Part II of this Australian adventure. I messed up my first shot at a red kan-

garoo, and with that botched shot I quickly learned about the red beast and did not make that mistake again. Don’t miss the next installment regarding the story about the land down under. Next time it’s all about guns, loads, and fast moving targets.
