Annual Report 2010-2011 Named Endowed Funds


Established during the 1988-89 school year by Ann and George Loper, Cyn- nie and Mike Davis, and Robin Munn, The Loper/Davis/Munn Fund supports scholarships for minority students.


The Judge Harold H. Purcell Schol- arship Fund, established in 1992 by Har- old Purcell, sponsors an award presented to an outstanding male student in the sophomore class at the end of the school year.


The David E. Bard Endowed Schol- arship is designated to provide financial support to an Upper School scholar/athlete. Te scholarship was established in 1996 by Charles Purcell.


Charles Knopf initiated the Mary Welham Knopf Library Endowment Fund in 1993 to replace, update, and increase our Up- per School library’s fantastic resources.


The Strickler Endowment Fund aug- ments our need-based financial aid program.


The Edward and Janet Miller Schol- arship Fund was created in 1998 and helps maintain the high expectations we have for our students by funding academic scholar- ships.


Established in 1992, the St. Anne’s- Belfield School Mastership pro- vides supplemental support to a selected faculty member’s annual salary. In 2006, it was renamed the Diana Edwards Smith Teaching Mastership.


The Phyllis Culbertson Draper En- dowment, established in 2000 by Phyllis and William Draper, supports the scholarship fund at St. Anne’s-Belfield School. In honor of this giſt, each year the Phyllis Culbertson Draper Art Award is presented to an out- standing senior.


In an effort to enable the school to invite and host speakers in all areas of interest, Amie and David van Roijen initiated the David M. van Roijen Speaker Fund in 2000.


The Pamela Malone Fund was estab- lished in 1994 in honor of a beloved former history teacher and Senior Master. Each year, the Malone Prize is awarded to a member of the school faculty at graduation in recogni- tion of that individual’s loyalty, service, and contribution to the life of the school.


The W. Alton Jones Foundation Fund was initiated in 1983 to support teacher sala- ries.


In 2001, an award committee of former play- ers and friends of our Athletic Director and former boys’ varsity lacrosse head coach es- tablished the Doug Tarring Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit an Upper School scholar/athlete.


The Doug Wardle Endowed Fund, or Doug’s Fund, was established in memory of Doug Wardle ’08 who passed away dur- ing a school service trip to Nicaragua in the summer of 2007. His parents, Nancy and Bill, decided to honor their son’s dedication and commitment to helping others by setting up a fund to provide financial assistance to deserv- ing students so they, too, can participate in service learning opportunities in Nicaragua.


Over the years, various classes have joined together to initiate endowments to benefit student scholarships at St. Anne’s-Belfield School, granting deserving children the same opportunities that they enjoyed. 2003 marked the first year of the Class of 1978 Endow- ment, while 2004 saw the re-instatement of the Class of 1954 Endowment, also known as the ‘In As Much’ Fund. The Class of 2004 Endowment became that class’s legacy to the school, as it was funded by its Senior Class Giſt.


For the past 30 years, the Susanne Smith Memorial Fund has been awarded to a student to provide scholarship support. Tis year’s recipient of the Susanne Williams Smith Memorial Scholarship was Corinna Coffin.


Dating back to before 1990, the Erksine Wilde Fund was created to draw the bright- est and most dedicated students to the school through providing scholarship funds.


Established during the 1999-2000 school year to create the Faculty Staff Endowed Scholarship, this fund provides financial aid for children of faculty and/or staff mem- bers who wish to attend St. Anne’s-Belfield.


In an effort to bolster diversity at St. Anne’s- Belfield School, the Gilder Foundation initi- ated the Gilder Minority Scholar- ship Fund in 1999.

In 1999, the school hosted an auction and used the proceeds to start the Faculty Sum- mer Development Program Endow- ment. Tis endowment helps our faculty stay abreast of the latest advances in their academic fields and new teaching methods by providing for continued professional development dur- ing the summer months.


Named in honor of one of the school’s former headmasters, the George Conway Lec- tureship sponsors an annual lecture on campus. Te St. Anne’s-Belfield School Board of Trustees created the endowed fund in July of 2006, upon Dr. Conway’s retirement.


The Lossie N. Wilkinson Endowed Teacher Award is funded by an endow- ment established in 1998 by Jay Wilkinson and is designed to honor a teacher who makes a difference with young people both in and out of the classroom. Tis year’s recipient was Ms. Janet Moore-Coll, Upper School Photog- raphy and Digital Video Teacher and Year- book Sponsor.


The Susan Smith Endowment for Faculty Professional Development and Enrichment was established in 2010 during Te Campaign for Our Next Century by a group of individuals touched by Susan’s positive influence during her seventeen-year tenure as a Lower School teacher. Te group included current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, and faculty and staff.


Established in 2010, the Doug Tarring Boys’ Lacrosse Program Endowment was created by a group of former lacrosse play- ers and their families to recognize Doug’s longtime contribution to boys’ lacrosse at St. Anne’s-Belfield School. Te endowment will support the boys’ lacrosse program in perpe- tuity.


It is with gratitude to our Girls' Varsity La- crosse Head Coach that the Mary King Blake Endowment for Girls' La- crosse was established in 2010 to support the girls' lacrosse program at St. Anne's- Belfield School. During her twenty-three years at the school, Mary has earned the re- spect of countless current and former student- athletes who are excited to see the program continue to excel.
