a second grader, both in and outside of the classroom. Tis is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their St. Anne’s-Belfield School experience with someone close to them, and they are usually beaming with excitement to do so.

On the day of the event, guests are invited to participate in a unique Book Fair fundraiser. A large selection of books is made available for grandparents, parents, and friends to purchase in honor of a particular child. Each book then receives a name plate on the inside front cover, is electronically cataloged and incorporated into the school’s library. As our Learning Village Librarian, Michele Mathieson, describes, “Te children take great pride in these dedications” and are thrilled to visit the library to discover special books which bear their name. Many students have even been known to check out their new books several times throughout the school year. And just as overall attendance has grown, so has the success of this fundraiser. During the 2011 event, nearly 300 books were dedicated and added to our school’s collection!

Another powerful highlight of the day, which has held strong since 1979, is the tradition of musical performances. Under the careful and creative direction of Alice Layman, the past years have been filled with a unique array of musical themes to showcase the talents of students. Performances have included Sounds We Found, Disney Spectacular, American Folk Songs, Festival of Freedom,

Of Mice and Mozart, Kid Pan Alley, Centennial in Song, and Compose Yourself. With sadness, we say goodbye and best wishes to Mrs. Layman as she departs from St. Anne’s-Belfield School aſter nineteen years of priceless dedication. Her poise and talents will be greatly missed. "Grandparents' Day has been a big part of my life since I came to St. Anne's-Belfield School," Layman said. "It was always indeed a very special day. It was always fun preparing a special musical program with the Lower School students - and giving the 4th

graders a chance to shine.

I hope to be able to come back as a 'Special Friend' in the years to come." When asking 1st

grade students to reflect upon the entire

day, most responses were centered on the excitement of performing. Joshua Libby says, “Te day was fun, but it had a few challenges. Remembering hard lines and staying together with the other singers was tough, but in the end, it was AWESOME!” Morgan Berry felt, “Te Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day performance was definitely challenging. I was afraid to go out on stage because of the big crowd, but it was definitely worth it.”

We would be remiss if we did not emphasize again how many volunteers, faculty, and friends have unselfishly leant their support. St. Anne’s-Belfield School wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped make each Grandparents’ and Special Friends' Day a success. With your support, this wonderful event has blossomed into a remarkable tradition that we hope will continue for many years to come.

"I think Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day is an awesome day because grandparents get to hear their grandchild sing. After the performance, they see all of the cool classrooms that belong to their

grandchild. This is when they get to see what we are learning about." (2011) Mary Holland Mason '22
