When David Lourie signed on as St. Anne’s-Belfield School's new Head of School in 2006, he had no idea of the scope of the school’s next major project,Te Campaign for Our Next Century. During the fall of his first year at the school, Mr. Lourie quickly realized that the school was ready to take on a challenge. “Te school had good momentum going at the time, and we had very ambitious goals for this campaign,” recalls Mr. Lourie. He sought input from parents, faculty, the Board of Trustees, and other school leaders to create a needs-based plan. “Tis campaign was a remedial one, meaning we had leaking roofs and desperately needed additional space. It was clear that physical changes to the campuses needed to be made,” ex- plained Mr. Lourie. In addition to constructing a new Pre-School and Kin- dergarten through 8th grade Learning Village and renovating the Middle School building into a Center for Arts & Sciences, the campaign helped bolster the school’s endowment by over 750 percent to $21 million while maintaining a $1 million Annual Fund.
Even through a tough economic climate, school leaders made the deter- mined decision to forge ahead with their original plans with the finish line being the school’s centennial year. In October, we celebrated the end of the campaign, having raised over $44 million! Mr. Lourie is thrilled with the progress he’s seen, but notes a distinct feeling of ‘what’s next?’ around the school community. As we embark upon a new strategic plan focusing on academics along with the culture and community of the school, Mr. Lourie notes how vital the campaign was to reaching this point: “Te Campaign for Our Next Century provided an amazing foundation and allowed us to begin these conversations. Now we have the space and the financial securi- ty to be bolder in our wants and move forward into a phase of aspirations."
