Recycling uniforms into bags

Eurostar is issuing its train managers with a world first – bags created entirely from recycled uniforms and headrest covers. The new bags were created by upcycling company, Worn Again and designed by Benjamin Shine. The bags are currently being distributed to

more than 250 train managers in the UK, France and Belgium. Peter Bragg, head of Environment and Energy

for Eurostar, said: “Our work with Worn Again is part of our commitment to reduce our impact on the environment. Eurostar train managers were involved in every stage of the design process and their contribution has helped us create a completely recycled product, that not only meets their needs but is worthy of appearing at the British Design Museum.” Cyndi Rhoades, ceo of Worn Again, said:

“The bags have been a big project and it’s exciting that from next month, Eurostar train managers will be literally wearing the brand’s commitment to sustainability.” The bags were made in the UK by Barrow

and Gale, a traditional bags manufacturer in Woolwich. The company was established in 1750 and holds the royal warrant to manufacture Royal Maundy purses for HM The Queen. Recycling and upcycling uniforms and train

parts are key elements of Eurostar’s Tread Lightly programme, which aims to reduce its overall impact on the environment. www.eurostar.com

‘Grill master’ cruises

Celebrity Cruises is giving holidaymakers the opportunity to show off their culinary skills with the launch of its first ‘interactive’ restaurant, the Lawn Club Grill, aboard its newest ship Celebrity Silhouette. Diners at the new open-air eatery will have

the chance to team up with a Celebrity Cruises chef to act as the ‘Grill Master’ for their party – as well as picking up handy tips to make them the king or queen of the barbecue when they get back home. “People tend to associate grilling with the relaxing, carefree mood of summer – exactly what a Celebrity Cruises holiday is all about,” said Jacques Van Staden, vice president, Culinary Operations, “What can be better than experiencing something that’s popular among so many cultures around the world, while relaxing near a lawn of growing grass, surrounded by an endless view of the sea?” The Lawn Club Grill – now available for online, pre-cruise bookings for ticketed guests – will be open 5-10 pm nightly and 12-2 pm on one ‘sea day’ during each cruise. A reservation fee of $30 per person is required. The latest in Celebrity Cruises’ award- winning Solstice class of ships, the 2,886-guest Celebrity Silhouette will offer several industry- first venues and experiences within the Lawn Club. These include the relaxing, private, wi-fi-equipped cabanas called “The Alcoves,” and “The Porch,” a casual dining spot offering sandwiches and coffees with views of the sea and the ship’s lawn.
