Harnessing the Power of In-flight Technology

By Brett Proud, EVP, New Markets and Products, GuestLogix Inc.

THE airline industry is a prime example of under-realized ancillary revenues. Our airline industry partners, however, are realizing the value of

creating onboard revenue opportunities by offering destination-based products and services - innovative in-flight entertainment options, and convenient and secure payment options and solutions, all of which are powered by leading-edge technology. From opportunities in connectivity presented by travelers’ own mobile devices, to new opportunities that monetize in-flight entertainment content, these revenue possibilities come back to the power of technology and harnessing that technology to streamline airline business operations, while adding value for travelers.

RETHINKING THE CABIN SPACE AND BEYOND Onboard connectivity provides the platform to help airlines generate new ancillary revenue streams and enables carriers to monetize passenger connectivity. With the onset of today’s mobile culture (85% of Americans over 18 now own mobile phones and spend nearly three hours a day on their mobile devices), and when paired with a ‘walled garden’ approach, passengers can increase the quality of their onboard experience while interacting directly through their own devices and generating revenues for carriers. Airlines must rethink what their entire cabin space means to them and their passengers, and harness the technology that powers their onboard store, and importantly, their future.

THE POWER OF IFE MONETIZATION New technologies have been developed that enable seamless transactions between airlines and consumers. Redefining the nature of IFE and transforming the experience of viewing media onboard, new technologies offer passengers the chance to interact in real time with any object viewed on content that captures their interest such as a TV show, sports program or music

video. Travelers can literally touch and interact within their entertainment environment, creating the opportunity for airlines to monetize any IFE content from where the passenger is seated.

THE POWER OF ONBOARD CONNECTIVITY Backend technologies, more secure than ever, are taking pre-flight, in-cabin, and online sales to the next level. Platforms enabling airlines to create logical product categories and relevant service offerings through online sales portals allow those airlines to leverage in-flight internet access. This allows airlines to provide free Wi-Fi access to passengers without sacrificing revenue that could be earned by selling access. They harness their Wi-Fi ‘asset’ and turn it from a product with finite revenue to a revenue enabler of significant proportion.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY Following this theme, this October, airline operators will have the opportunity to learn about innovative new solutions to help them harness the power of technology, keeping passengers connected while also driving ancillary revenues at the 2011 GuestLogix User Group Conference. For the third consecutive year, the GuestLogix User Group Conference will engage participants in discussions

about the present and future of onboard retail technology as well as emerging technology and solutions that will maximize sales opportunities in the onboard environment.

The largest industry-wide community gathering

focused specifically on growing onboard sales, the 2011 GuestLogix User Group Conference will feature prominent speakers from over 30 of the world’s largest airlines and travel operators, breakout and panel presentations to examine the revenue potential of an integrated retail strategy in helping to monetize onboard sales, and networking opportunities with senior travel representatives, in addition to GuestLogix’ technology providers and partners. Taking place from October 3rd to 5th in Toronto, Canada, GuestLogix will introduce new products, technologies and strategies that will take onboard retailing to the next level.
