San Juan Island Yacht Club SHAW ISLAND CLASSIC

Island trying to avoid the ebb. Cry's of “water” were common and and it even got more interesting as the larger boats started to overtake the fleet. Lyn Adkins in his brand spankin’

new J-111, Adalgisa, was the first to set sail across San Juan Channel to lead the charge up the far shore, around the point

dns photo by Rich Hazelton The sailors of the Salish Sea are

blessed twice each year with the opportunity to battle their way around Shaw Island. Orcas Island YC sponsors the Winter Classic in February and San Juan Island YC sponsors the original Summer Classic. Although the winter version requires the fleet to leave Shaw to starboard, the summer version allows the skipper, or in the case of the Wild Rumpus, the skipper's wife, to choose clockwise or counterclockwise. The race starts at noon at the

entrance to Friday Harbor. With 56 boats registered in eight divisions, also augmented by a certain number of un- official "Hippie Shaw" entrants, the start line is a busy place. The fleet ranged

from a MacGregor 65/70 to a Hobie 18, to some cruising boats that likely could be the first boats to be assigned a four digit PHRF rating. Slow boats go first with a ten minute

headstart. Leading out at the start was the Moore 24 Amore and one of the Soling's skippered by Bob Brunius. Bob was taking a break from spinning the wheel on his J/120 Time Bandit to answer the ever popular question of, “Which way ya gonna go?” and heading west in a clockwise direction. “Too Late Arne” in his SC-27, drew a small yet brave following to the east in a 5 knot breeze doing the counterclockwise thing. The clockwise’s entered into a fierce tacking battle up the western shore of San Juan

Santa Cruz 27, "Saltheart Foamfollower" and Mariner H-28 “Ichiban,” meet at the half-way mark and continue on around Shaw Island.
