Some of the other worst moments
were a couple accidental tacks in the middle of the night at the beginning of the trip. It was frustrating because I felt like I’d failed, but realized afterwards that it’s not that big of a deal. I really don’t like waking you up. You need your sleep too, but unfortunately, because you have taken on a novice sailor, it had to be done. Also, leaving a job or a task
unfinished or in an unusual manner frustrated me because it was hard to pick up and complete something. For example, there was that awful night we had when the genoa slipped in the water and the lifelines broke. Because you did something different and took the hanks off and I did something different and tied it down poorly, and then you tied it on way too tight, the shit hit the fan. That was definitely one of the major downer disasters. How was your diet affected by life on a boat? Kelly: How has my vegetarian cooking been for you? Brian: I haven’t missed my meaty
diet that much, that’s quite a credit to you. If I had attempted to cook

vegetarian for myself, however, I would be bored pretty quick. However, I did have a cheeseburger the first day ashore, but the seed for that desire had been planted by your singing… Kelly: “Cheeseburger in paradise!”
But for me it was “Veggie burger in paradise.” I was so excited to have something different to eat. Obviously, my diet was much
more impacted. Being a vegetarian and living in an affluent country, it was hard to go without a regular supply of produce. In my land life I worked a lot and odd hours, so I’d eat out a lot. Prepping meals ourselves and endless dishes was different. Many people told me about the abundant opportunity to eat seafood because they were worried about my diet. We loaded up our provisions with beans and rice, plus I brought some protein options from Canada, so we could have been fine

without eating fish. Over the past 15 years I’ve eaten fish about five times, always sustainably caught. But I told people I may eat some fish as we would be catching it in a sustainable way, but I still felt, when I had a piece of flesh from the first fish that you caught, that it was a moral, ethical, spiritual and historical betrayal. So, I think my diet was much more deeply impacted than yours. I took solace that the fish had a natural life beforehand. Brian: “Moral, ethical, historical spiritual betrayal, wow!” Kelly: You saw that it was really
hard for me. I tried to explain it to you, I think you got it. But I think we’ve been eating well under the circumstances. And now we’ve got all the fruit we could desire!
When were we the most annoyed with each other? Brian: You’re normally super
energetic and fun and you are always laughing which is great, like 99.9% of the time. Only at rare moments is it very grating. One such moment was when your coffee cup flew across the cabin.
Kelly: Hahahahaa that was funny
hahahaa… Brian: I was wearing your coffee on
my ass. In my only clean pair of boxers. “I’m sorry,” doesn’t mean a lot when you can’t stop LAUGHING! Kelly: It wasn’t really my fault! Brian: It was totally your fault Kelly: It had nothing to do with

big swells on a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Hahaha okay, I’m sorry I wasn’t holding onto my coffee cup every single moment that there was a drop of coffee in it. THAT was my fault. Brian: It was full cup of coffee! And
it was all over my ass. And I’m sorry I couldn’t see the humor in it at the moment, I was so angry and there you were just laughing away. Kelly: (Tearing with laughter) It
was really funny. Brian: Another such moment was
when I was trying to rewire the inverter because it was giving chronic problems charging your computer. I must have been tired because I kept botching the work, and also there was no way to tell what the polarity should be so I was wiring it backwards and blowing fuses
