Left to right: Exciting downwind sailing in Fleet P2, “Grace E,” “Jabiru,” “Corvo,” and “Hravn.”
By day two it was still anybody’s
regatta. The leading boats in each fleet were separated by only a point or two. In the P30 fleet Laney Gale with the Olson 911, Blue Martini, commented that “the fleet had a great showing, making the weeks racing challenging with several boats taking the podium during the week.” By the end of the week Blue Martini had won the P30 Championship Burgee after a hard fought regatta. When racing a multi-day one-design
regatta, it is always a good idea to find a tuning partner within your fleet. On Giant Slayer, we chose Alex Simanis’ Little Blue Dune Buggy as a tuning partner. Having a tuning partner often helps dial in boat performance and rig tuning. Knowing when you are matching speed and point with your partner and why is critical to being competitive in a one- design fleet. Alex and his crew worked tirelessly through the week to come out ahead of the fleet and win the 2011 Santa Cruz 27 Nationals.
Day three was the a-typical
“race week” day with moderate southerly winds and overcast skies. To accommodate the wind, the CYC set the days racing in Saratoga Passage. Running north to south and bordered by Whidbey and Camano islands, Saratoga Passage would require entirely unique tactical considerations. As the wind progressively died through the day, fleets had the opportunity to test their
skills racing in light wind. The CYC was able to run two races before the wind diminished completely. Heather Sloat aboard Chester
Hibbert’s Jack Rabbit, commented after racing that “the CYC race committee, as always, did a top notch job running the weeks races.” Nancy Ann Neudauer, who held the perspective of the race committee, pointed out that everyone should volunteer from time to time.
