of 3% or 10%. The first is for critical systems like navigation lights or bilge pumps and the later is for things like bait pumps, cabin lights, etc. Buss Bars and Terminal Blocks are
used to terminate wires. In the case of buss bars, wires of common polarity can be terminated in a convenient spot. On the AC side, buss bars are used for the ground and the neutral wires. For the DC side, they can be used for the ground or negative wires. Terminal blocks are efficient for terminating wires close to a distribution panel or similar situation. It is also possible to use jumpers so you can connect common wires. Nickel plating helps brass to resist corrosion, so spend the little extra when choosing a buss bar. Pilot or Indicator Lights are basically
warnings or advisors that something is taking place. For instance, the bilge pump is pumping or the running lights are on. You can be a little more creative and place them near the main hatch to be reminded of the things you want turned off when you leave the boat, like the water and propane systems. Also, they can indicate if a water pressure pump is running dry. We all try to

make pumps run quietly but then we can be unaware when we run out of water. (Figure 5) There is a whole new generation of LED pilot lights available, many times in an assortment of colors. If you have a 24vdc system onboard, you can use 12v LEDs, but each color may require a resister with a different value put in line with it. GFCI and ELCI (Electrical Leakage
Circuit and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) devices are something newer for boats that have come about partly from the investigation of swimming related electrocutions. ABYC has standards that require all new boats, built by ABYC rated builders, to be protected by one ELCI and one or more GFCIs. This is something any boat owner should consider, not only for their safety, but also for those who might be swimming near their boat while it is tied up in a marina. Most of us are familiar with GFCI outlets found in homes. These are not IP (ignition protected) and so would not be appropriate in spaces where IP is needed. The ELCI device must be within 10 feet of the shore power inlet and is for the protection of the
