As the winds lightened to calm by the end of the afternoon lenticular clouds formed over the surrounding Tzouha l em and Tuam mountains; providing us with a stunning visual play of shape and color. The rugged landscape soon had a touch of the surreal. Sunday we woke with

sunshine, warmth and a variable westerly generated by a low pressure system passing to the north; an unusual condition for Cow Bay. As Jim Bottles of the J/30 Celebration, put it “Traditional tactics were out the window making Sunday’s race, anybody’s race.” Keeping true to tradition the race committee ran one long distance race. The only thing unusual was that the race would be run backwards with marks in reverse order to accommodate the unusual breeze direction. As all nine fleets started the westerly

the fleets had consolidated with many boats trading positions for first as light puffs rolled down the bay. By the time we reached the entry to Satellite Channel the thermal easterly had gained control and spinnakers quickly changed to head sails. With a short upwind leg we rounded Wain Rock and set our spinnaker again for the downwind leg to the finish. With the closest fleet racing I have experienced, everyone consolidated on the western beach in a jibing duel to the finish. The nimble Melges 24 against the imposing Santa Cruz 50 LawnDart was a site to see. Only in the Pacific Northwest would we be able to sail a race downwind both ways.

By days end, as we basked in the

warm afternoon sun sharing stories, the consensus was that there is no regatta quite like Cow Bay.
