whole system. If your AC distribution panel is close enough to your power inlet, then the ELCI can act as your main breaker. GFCI protected outlets are to be mounted in the head, galley, machinery space, or on a weather deck (above deck). To protect the galley and
engine space outlets which need IP, you can install GFCI breakers at your panel that will protect them. The best practice would be to use GFCI breakers for all of them because then you would have a truly marine solution. However, this will increase the cost significantly.

The amount of current in the “hot” vs “neutral” wires should be equal. A difference indicates leakage. The difference needed to trip the device is 5ma (milliamperes) or 30ma. 5ma will protect life (GFCI) and 30ma (ELCI) protects equipment. These are some elements which
need to be considered in any electrical installation you might be doing on your boat. Also, the GFCI and the ELCI theme is more recent and some of the protection devices have only become available in the last year. We hope all this is helpful. Not to be redundant but, if in doubt about what you’re doing, seek professional advise or have a professional do the work.
