The 44’sail training ketch Yankee Clipper, emissary of the City of Seattle and the State of Washington at Tall Ships events in the Northwest, has recently been reactivated and is searching for knowledgeable, adult volunteers to assist in training high school age youth in the ways of the sea. Based on the Sea Scout advancement program, members of the crew learn skills in seamanship, boating safety and service to their community, through weekly meetings and cruises to other Puget Sound harbors. Prospective crew members are welcome to inquire to the Yankee Clipper Foundation: (206) 932-0971.
John Kelly
Near the end of the day’s sailing of the Northwest Youth Sailing Championships, Jan and I spotted this lone, young sailor approaching, steadily making his way around the course. We positioned the photo boat so that he could pass close aboard, and readied ourselves for Jan’s shot. We were both blessed with what we witnessed as he passed. Such calm, such peace, such poise, this could only be a sailor that couldn’t even yet define victory or defeat. Gazing directly at Jan, yet not posing, this was clearly a child that was young enough to still appreciate the gift of sailing at its base level, so he wasn’t yet caught up in catching up. No kinetics, no tactics, no concerns. This young sailor was so present in his relaxed joy, that he remained positioned exactly as shown here for the reminder of the downwind leg. This encounter filled our hearts, and for one brief shining moment, we were young.
