ASIA

THE Walt Disney Company, along with joint venture partner Shanghai Shendi Group, has broken ground on the Shanghai Disney Resort following approval from the Chinese central government in Beijing. “The ground-breaking ceremony marks

a significant milestone in the history of The Walt Disney Company,” said Robert Iger, president and CEO of Disney. “Our Shanghai resort will be a world-

class family vacation destination that combines classic Disney characters and storytelling with the uniqueness and beauty of China. Working with our Chinese partners, the Shanghai Disney Resort will be both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.” The Shanghai Disney Resort will be home to Shanghai

Disneyland, a Magic Kingdom-style park that will blend classic Disney storytelling and characters with all-new attractions and experiences tailored specifically for the people of China. The park will feature several themed lands complete with

iconic Disney attractions and experiences. At the heart of the resort will be an interactive Disney

castle, along with entertainment, dining and performance experiences that will be unique to Shanghai Disneyland. The park will also contain other large-scale entertainment venues, indoor and out, that can be used for various purposes throughout the year.

Hong Kong to host AAE 2012

OFFICIALS from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions have announced that the Asian Attractions Expo 2012 will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from June 5-8. “IAAPA is excited to bring Asian Attractions Expo - the

industry’s premier trade show in Asia - to Hong Kong, one of the most dynamic cities in the world,” said association chairman Bob Rippy. “Asia is booming right now and so is the region’s

attractions industry,” added IAAPA’s Asia-Pacific executive director Andrew Lee. “It makes perfect sense for industry buyers and sellers to participate in four days of business transactions, education and networking in the heart of the world’s fastest-growing economy.” Since 1997, AAE has been the premier event for the multi-

billion dollar leisure and attractions industry in Asia. More than 4,500 professionals from 40 countries are expected to participate in the event, which covers amusement and theme park rides, architectural and design services, coin-operated games, skill games and redemption prizes. The event will include education sessions related

to safety, operations and management presented by worldwide industry leaders in each discipline. Sessions will cover industry trends and best practices and participants will network with colleagues to renew old business relationships and develop new ones.

Hello Kitty park to open in 2014

SANRIO, the Japanese company behind the world-famous Hello Kitty cartoon franchise, has agreed to lend its brand to a US$230m outdoor theme park in China. The Hello Kitty-themed amusement park, to be located

in the city of Anji, in east China’s Zhejiang province, will be jointly designed by Sanrio and US-based amusement park designer Hettema, with construction scheduled to start in the second half of this year and a full opening ceremony to take place in 2014. “We have long received many requests from Asian

countries to invest in building a theme park using our characters,” Sanrio spokesman Kazuo Tohmatsu said, adding that the firm will not make capital investment in the venue. Under the licensing agreement, the Chinese partner, a

subsidiary of Shanghai Insight Holdings, will build and operate the park while Sanrio will provide its characters and planning, Tohmatsu said. According to reports, Sanrio also plans to build a much smaller indoor amusement park featuring the company’s famous characters in Malaysia in 2012. There are currently two Hello Kitty theme parks in Japan but none overseas.

IAAPI seeks increased government support

THE Indian Association of Amusement Parks and Industries (IAAPI) has asked the country’s government to grant the amusement park sector “social sector industry status,” whilst seeking support to develop the industry’s infrastructure and standardise taxation. After the country’s first amusement park - Appu Ghar

in Delhi - opened in 1984, India now has more than 120 large-scale parks and the industry is projected to grow at 10 to 15 per cent annually. As an apex body representing the interests of a diverse

range of amusement and leisure businesses in India, IAAPI hosts the annual IAAPI Amusement Expo, which next year takes place from March 1-3 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai.
