Competitions

Our benchrest for ‘score’ shoot in June attracted a very poor entry and although holiday absences can be blamed to some extent, there is clearly little demand for this type of benchrest competition and for next year, we will perhaps concentrate on building our group-shooting competitions.

With the World Benchrest Championships in August, there are few opportunities left for our GB Teams to practise so a good turn-out ensued though as always, the Diggle winds were tricky and very few really small groups were shot. The smallest was a 0.135 incher by Ian Dixon in Warm-up and Ian went on to win the Heavy varmint Class.

In Factory Sporter, Darrel Evans once again took the win with a very respectable half MOA agg.

The following day, it was WINDY – even by Diggle’s standard! Even the big ‘seven’s were being blown out to two-foot plus groups! There were some embarrassingly large groups posted but, a comp. is a comp. and as always, it’s all about beating the other guys and tiny groups are just a bonus.

Eventually winner was Martin Miles, shooting a 6.5-284 built by Russ Gall. It was Martin’s first 1000 yard win and his 7.4 inch group was easily the best of the day. It was almost an ‘upset’ for we had newcomer Mike McGuigan, shooting his 6.5x47 tactical rifle, leading right up until the last Match when Martin shot his 7.4 inch group – anything over 9.5 inches and Mike would have won, with a string of very consistent one MOA groups.

Most Factory Sporter shooters had a torrid time in the extreme conditions so congratulations to Alan Seagrave and his absolutely standard 6.5x55 Sako who not only won his class but beat many Light Gun shooters in the process. Phil Gibbon shot smallest factory group but a final group of 30 inches - plus a penalty for a
