Taff Wilcox & John Bloomfield
anything else. This is slightly disappointing as there are so many other matches like the McQueens, shotgun, precision and some of the more obscure events that I would love to have a go at, but there simply just isn’t enough time for me to have a go at them all! This certainly isn’t a criticism but purely a fact that you can only fit so much shooting into 3 days and as I like to gauge my performance against the top guys in these 2 disciplines, it doesn’t look like I’ll be shooting many of the other available matches in the future, but that’s my own choice.
We all obviously all like to turn up and just shoot at the Phoenix (and every other GR match for that matter) but it just wouldn’t be possible without the help and dedication of both the organisers and range crew alike. Brian Thomas and Chris Farr did an excellent job on the organisation side of things and they were helped by a host of other people including the NRA/NSC office staff, the girls on the front desk and the NRA range staff to name but a few. The most important group of people though at the Phoenix are definitely the Range Officers, who give up their time and put in a lot of effort to ensure that we can both compete in, and relax within a safe environment. Many of them have to turn up on the Tuesday or Wednesday to help set up the ranges and then try to shoot all of their own matches before the punters turn up on the Friday. Unfortunately they
don’t always get to finish everything they need to in time and can usually be seen running around during the weekend trying to fit in or finish off one match or another. On the whole I thought this year’s R.O’s were excellent and it was nice to see them helping out both the novices and more experienced shooters on the range, when a guiding hand was needed so again a big thank you to everyone who helped us out! If you would like to start helping out at a GR event either as an R.O or as part of the range crew, please get in touch through the
Galleryrifle.com website and we will do all we can to help you get started.
All in all this year’s Phoenix was another great success and it was nice to have our trophies presented by John Bloomfield (twice winner of the Queen’s Prize and numerous other shooting achievements) at the prize giving. It was also good to see the up and coming shooters receiving and taking their medals away, as well as being able to put a face to the name as it were to the shooters from some of the other disciplines. On a final note, we would all like to send our best wishes and get well messages to Jackie Cowling who unfortunately was unable to attend this year, but hopefully we may get to see you again at the Nationals, all being well! Next month I’ll finally be able to take a look at the twin rail Tactical Solutions X Ring 10/22 type receivers, and very nice they are too.
