gauge. Everything was so true and the gauge had spun so easily and fast that our oversize ten-penny piece had locked up solid against the ‘shoulder’ and now defied every attempt to remove it. Some five minutes of wrestling and cursing finally saw the recalcitrant gauge’s grip broken – “I won’t show off like that again!”, was a relieved gunsmith’s response, but I was impressed. Then, finally the recessed crown was cut – a neat job as you can see in the photograph.

X-Mark Pro™ All that was left to do now was to reassemble everything followed by a bit of trigger adjustment. Dave was noticeably cool about Remy’s ‘improved’ X-Mark Pro™ device saying he much prefers the original model. A few minutes of adjustment saw the trigger ‘break’ reliably at 2lbs apparently safely with the bolt operated smoothly at normal speed. Dave asked me to try it and while the X-Mark Pro™ is crisp as supplied by the Green Machine, it’s heavy and this was a massive improvement, so I’m impressed.

“But......!” says our man taking the rifle back and now manipulating the bolt rapidly, a loud

‘click’ on each and every closure revealing that while locked it was certainly not cocked, the striker having fallen of its own volition – a very dangerous condition. So there was nothing for it but to slowly add pull-weight back on, redoing the bolt ‘slammed-shut’ test each time until the ‘click’ disappeared at 3lbs with the bent-to-sear engagement holding up no matter how roughly the bolt was handled.

So, that’s what we left it at? Unfortunately not, Dave explaining that with this being a nearly new rifle, we could expect the pull weight to ease off anyway as use runs the trigger parts in, potentially by a full pound. In consequence, that amount needed to be added onto the rifle’s minimum safe setting to ensure continued satisfactory operation, so 4lb it ended up – higher than can usually be safely employed with the older 700 trigger assembly but an improvement on the X-Mark Pro’s original factory setting, nevertheless.

Results We’d spent nearly three hours before Dave handed the rifle back but that time had been extended by his patiently explaining each step
