Disabled Shooting Project FOCUS CLUBS – Applications invited! By Liz Woodall, DSP Co-ordinator

to a standard which will enable them to deliver that all important first experience of shooting. Obviously not all clubs can accommodate all types of disability, but if the DSP can encourage and nurture the development of a network of reasonably disabled-friendly clubs across the country, our hope is that pretty well every type of disability can be catered for within a reasonable travelling distance.

Everyone knows that clubs are the backbone of any sport, and target shooting is no exception. That’s why, when the Disabled Shooting Project’s Working Group was exploring how best to cater for disabled and less-able shooters, we realised that clubs would be the keystone to the infrastructure we need to create.

Obviously there are a great many clubs, covering the full range of target shooting disciplines, that already have members with some degree of disability or impairment. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that pretty well every club in the country has one or more such members. That speaks volumes for the inclusivity of the sport, and for the willingness of shooting clubs to extend a warm welcome to people who are less than 100% able.

The plan Since the DSP’s aim is to generate great interest in the sport among disabled people, it’s clear that we have to try to ensure that the clubs we signpost them to have the capacity to cater for them adequately. This will ensure that that the disabled person’s first experience of shooting is a positive one. That means identifying clubs who are ready, willing and able to welcome as members people with a range of different disabilities. Also that when they get there, the facilities, staff, equipment and systems are up

Having arrived at this point, the next stage of the plan is to find clubs throughout the country that are willing to become DSP Focus Clubs. The objective is to have at least one per county; obviously more for the biggest counties.
