Final barrel work – re-crowning commences


This process required several passes and when completed the thread was checked by screwing a stainless steel disk, maybe two and a bit inches diameter and three quarters-inch thick with a threaded hole in its centre, onto the barrel. This apparently simple device turned out to be a BS thread gauge, the hole diameter and thread- form meeting the appropriate specifications minutely. They cost around £100 each and Valkyrie Rifles has several on hand to check out the various threading jobs seen in gunsmithing work. Dave explained that the gauge would


screw onto the newly threaded section without binding or slop if the job had been done properly and its guaranteed flat and perpendicular face would fit up snugly against the original full barrel-diameter ‘shoulder’ behind the reduced diameter threaded section if everything is true. In fact, I’m told, if it’s all been done right the gauge will make a ‘click’ as it mates with this surface when manually spun back fast on the threads, a procedure that was then demonstrated, a satisfying ‘snick’ clearly audible.
