to learn and improve their techniques meant they were soon putting in some good scores on the practice range, and I for one was very impressed. They started shooting their proper matches along with everyone else on the Friday and it didn’t take long before JP Wessels put in an excellent 118 12x in his GRSB Multi Target match placing him 3rd overall for the whole meeting. His father Anton and Gerrie de Beer then followed up with a pair of 109’s along with the big guy Hercules Louw on a 108. JP then

went one point better with a 119 12x in the centre fire M/T match placing 4th overall out of 133 competitors. An even higher accomplishment of 1481 83x in the GRSB 1500 match earned him another 4th overall whilst Gerrie shot a 1480 in his first ever GRCF 1500 match, with JP 5 points him on a 1475. Alan Whittle will give you the complete run down on the Monday’s International 1500 matches but I can tell you that the South African guys went on to average 1479pts each in the centre fire match which to me is an outstanding achievement for their first attempt so a big well done to them all! Had one of their team not had a major problem with his rifle from match 4 onwards, I’m sure the outcome would have been different and this is only going to make it an even more exciting match to compete in next year.

Thankfully the high standard of shooting at this year’s Phoenix wasn’t just confined to the guys in gold and green and some other notable performances over the weekend included Taff Wilcox being only 1x off equalling the British Record with a 300 29x in the T&P1 GRCF match, and David Hackett and Keith Cox were the only shooters to score a maximum 300 with
