Richard Hattersley has just scrambled an egg at 600 yards and won £100

– or dropped off – or stayed the same? Steve Lewis with the 6XC had another sub one-inch three-shot group on the Grounhog’s body – the odd quarter-minute tweak and he could be a contender..........................

mind getting it wet – even though the DTA is a five- grand rifle! See Mike Silva Jothy’s experience with it elsewhere in this issue of Target Shooter.

At 500 yards, on a good day, only half the field will hit the tiny A3 size groundhog target and you really need a hit as this gives you something to gauge the wind against for your one shot at the egg. Today was amazing – in spite of the rain and 600 rather than 500 yards, only eleven competitiors failed to record a score (I was one of them) – it could be an expensive day at £100 per egg broken!

As shooters poured over their targets under the shelter of the covered firing-point the atmosphere was buzzin’ – just what the Egg Shoot is all about – good company, accurate rifles. Some shooters were proudly showing their groups, others wondering where their shots went! Now it’s time to make that critical scope adjustment. Has the wind picked up

Twenty-seven shooters had fired their one shot at the egg before we saw it spectacularly scrambled – by Richard Hattersley shooting a 30-06 Ackley! No offence Richard but that’s just about the last cartridge I would choose for an accurate rifle! With only two shooters to go – one of them being the aforementioned Steve Lewis – would we see another egg scrambled?

Shooter number 29, John Coleman with the Accuracy International chambered in 300 Win Mag. failed to even frighten it and Steve Lewis with the trick little 6XC did no better. For the record, when we looked at their shots, both the Win. Mag. and the 6XC were only an inch or so apart but, more importantly, they were six-inches to the left of the egg – the wind had clearly picked-up.

Richard Hattersley did score eight points on the Groundhog target and no doubt adjusted from his group. A good wind-call and that heavy bullet should buck the wind better. Richard was predictably modest “I guess it was a lucky shot”. Yes, it always is but if you are going to be any good at this game that luck needs to be tempered with a bit of sound logic and shooting skill.

The winners - from left: Chris vaux, Steve Lewis, Bruce Lenton, Richard Hattersley, Darren Grundle and Trevor Collins
