that could escalate to as much as 25% in the next 10-15 years. Effective energy management is a cost reduction strategy that can have an immediate impact on profitability and is a major component of an effective risk management strategy to protect against future energy rate increases and regulatory effects. With a strong commitment and a well-planned strat- egy, every metalcasting facility can become energy efficient. Te reduced energy costs derived from a focused program will free up money that can enhance profitability or be used to invest in other areas of the business. Reducing energy also can become a good marketing and public relations tool, dem- onstrating that your business is environmentally responsible and progressive.
Getting Started How does a metalcasting facility develop a comprehensive
energy management program? It begins with understanding what equipment and processes are contributing to energy consumption and developing a means to measure energy use. Although melting is the single biggest point of consumption (industry estimates indicate it is about 55% of the typical metalcaster’s energy bill), many points of use present oppor- tunities to significantly reduce cost in several areas (Fig. 1). Metalcasters should follow several basic principles to
achieve successful energy management: Make a commitment. Te first step is to establish energy
leadership and accountability. Previous studies have dem- onstrated that the single biggest key to a successful energy management program is a dedicated “energy champion” who is accountable and empowered by management. Te energy champion should serve as the go-to person for all energy issues and should be responsible for building employee awareness, setting energy reduction goals, coordinating all energy efforts in the organization, establishing metrics for measuring and tracking progress toward goals, and report- ing progress and successes to both shop floor personnel and management. An energy team also should be established. Tis team must include members from all areas of the metal- casting company, including operations, maintenance, engineering, environmental, front office, purchasing and administration. Assess your performance.
Before beginning a formal energy reduction program, each facility must determine current energy spending and establish a baseline to moni- tor progress. Once a baseline is established, the energy
