problem as well as we could, the results obtained must be viewed as being un- der average fi eld conditions rather than under controlled range conditions. In each case, three fi ve-shot groups were fi red at a distance of 50 yards with each type of ammunition, and the results of the accuracy tests are summarized in the accompanying table below. milled notches that allow Ruger rings to be attached. Therefore, the choice of scope mounts necessitated no deci- sions. Because we wanted to see what sort of accuracy we could wring out of the rifl es, we chose scopes of higher magnification and greater size than the rifl es would wear for fi eld use. The 10/22M was fi tted with a 6-20x AO Cabela’s Outfi tter, and the 77/22M had a 4-16x AO Weaver Classic mounted. With our .22 WMR rifl es modi-

fi ed, it was time to select a few types of ammunition and head to the range. The range in this case is just outside Buffalo, Wyoming, and it is never with- out wind. Although we dealt with this

tained are not listed, but it should be mentioned that the entire series of fi ve-shot groups ranged from 0.24 inch to 0.86 inch, and the largest group had four shots in 0.35 inch with one errant shot making the group 0.86 inch. The composite group sizes for the two bar- rels were only 0.61 inch and 0.57 inch for the 10/22M and 77/22M rifles, respectively. The data also show that with some types of ammunition the two barrels performed in almost identical fashion. For example, CCI V-Max gave average group measurements of 0.51 and 0.53 inch. However, there were also some major differences, the most striking of which is with the 50-grain Federal load. The bolt action gave an average group size of 0.43 inch while the autoloader gave 0.78 inch. On the other hand, the Remington 40-grain JHP gave an average group size of 0.43 inch in the autoloader but 0.69 inch in the bolt action. It is particularly gratify- ing that the bolt action gave such excel- lent accuracy with the 50-grain Federal load because it has signifi cantly higher retained energy out to the 100-yard mark, and it thus makes the best load available in .22 WMR for use on larger varmints such as coyotes. The result is

that when the testing was completed, the bolt-action rifl e was left sighted in with that load. Perhaps the most important fact

revealed by the data is that they per- formed in so nearly identical fashion when the results from all types of ammunition are considered. With the composite averages being only 0.61 inch and 0.57 inch, it is apparent that the two specimens are identical in overall performance, although some differences are seen with specifi c types of ammunition. Furthermore, it is ap- parent that the level of overall accuracy is excellent and should dispel the myth that the .22 WMR is not accurate. With a good barrel and the right ammunition it can deliver excellent accuracy. Both of our .22 WMR rifl es were

perfectly adequate in factory confi gu- ration, but they perform signifi cantly better in modifi ed form. It is very un- likely that they will be returned to their original state.
