The .25 BR rifle produced this group, though a replacement trigger had to be installed.

The author's project rifl e, built on a Zastava mini action, turned out to be a fi ne shooter.

rifl e three-pound setting. I wanted enough sear engagement to prevent any accidental or early discharge in cold weather (gloves or numb fi ngers). Later on Bob installed the replacement sear in the original

trigger. Putting the sears side by side, we could easily see where material had been removed. The trigger remains very diffi cult to pull because of the oversized pin the builder installed. I can either get a replacement pin or “machine” the pin down a hair by rolling it back and forth in some fi ne emery cloth until the trigger works freely. I will need to compare the trigger to an unaltered trigger to determine if it was altered too, but I now get good sear engagement. Once returned to factory specifi cations, this original trigger will be a spare, and I’ll leave the Numrich replacement on the rifl e. I guess I offended the young ’smith/rifl e builder when

I sent schematics and instructions that contradicted his state- ments about the adjustment of the Zastava trigger. The trigger problem and the “don’t tell me, I already know everything” ’smith are the only downside of this project. Well, that and the approximately $100 in insured shipping and near $100 for parts and shipping from Numrich added to the high fees originally charged by the builder. No, I won’t name the shop in a publica- tion, but if anyone wants to look at the rifl e, his stamp is on it. The .25 BR fi ts naturally, points like a charm, and the Bur-

ris optics are clear as can be. The Dan Lilja bore is lapped to a mirror fi nish, and break-in came easily. I know I could have paid more for a stock, but every Bell & Carlson I have ever had provided a solid, stable platform. As far as I can determine, Remington was the last im-

porter of the Zastava Mauser line, both the full-sized and the Mini-Mauser actions. They were sold as the Remington 798

(full size) and 799 (Mini) models, but have been dropped from the Remington catalog. Unless one could fi nd an Interarms or Daly action, the purchase of a Remington 799 chambered in .22-250 would be the way to get the Zastava mini action. Per- haps, someone could fi nd an Interarms or Daly Mini-Mauser on a used rack and go from there. Finding a mini action with a .473" bolt face is not easy, but if you want a small rifl e with the thump of a .250 Savage, the effort is worth it. I want to express my appreciation to Rich Machholz for

his expertise and help as project advisor. He had no way of knowing that the builder would develop a blind eye when it came to triggers. Rich’s friendship is a treasure. Dan Lilja makes some of the best barrels in the business, and Bell and Carlson make an affordable high quality stock. Midway USA provided Lapua 6mm BR brass that is wonderfully uniform and easily forms to .25 BR. I can’t wait to get this rifl e up to deer camp this season.

The only problem is that everyone who sees it doesn’t want to hand it back.
