SIMMONS 44 MAG SCOPE First up is the new Simmons 44

Mag, Model 441044. This is a 3-10x44 WA with multicoated lenses and a Truplex reticle. Hunting both bobcats and coyotes with this lightweight glass atop a Browning A-Bolt in .22-250, I found the scope to be very functional and free of any problems in the fi eld. Image clarity was excellent for glass in its price range. Reticle adjustments are ¼ moa and the scope stayed on zero when checked for a change in impact after a new zero setting was applied. I found the system was clearly able to return to the same correct zero setting even when moved 10 or 15 moa off the original zero. Changes in magnifi cation also didn’t affect impact points. This China-made unit rates in my book a solid four stars out of fi ve within its modest price class. KONUSPRO 2.5X32

Shotgun scopes need to be robust-

ly constructed because, in most cases, 12 gauge scattergun rounds deliver high recoil all the time. Shooting a steady diet of these loads on coyotes, or as a backup coyote tool, can result in short scope life if a low-quality scope is used. Konus scopes were tested on my

AR-15 M&P 15-T and a Remington 870 Super Magnum short barreled turkey model. With turkey loads the recoil of a 3.5" round is hard to describe without cussing. In effect it makes the .50 BMG seem like a .243 Winchester in com- parison. Even so, during pattern and zero work, and in the fi eld, the Konus 2.5x held up and is still aiding in send- ing rounds downrange as I work with another new varmint shotgun setup currently undergoing testing. Currently I’m shooting a Konus-

Pro M-30 4.5-16x on a .50 BMG Noreen bolt gun. Believe me, if there was any problem with this unit I would know it in short order. Some scopes can’t last fi ve rounds with a .50 BMG, but this sighting system is not one of them. Ko- nus scopes have very repeatable turret elevation and windage adjustments, clear optics (even in low light condi- tions), and they are produced in Italy. These scopes, in tactical and varmint confi gurations, are well within the af- fordable range. I give these folks a solid four stars regarding product quality. At this time I am not ready to award fi ve stars because we need to see how well

all of the parts hold together a ways down the road. TRIJICON TR23 5-20X50 What I’m about to do here is

not give justice to the very new and outstanding Trijicon 5-20x50 varmint scope. I have been shooting this glass for six months on hunts, at the range, on new test guns, and over prairie dog towns. What I have found is a system that is simply outstanding and com- pletely trouble free, right down to the very new rings and bases being offered by Trijicon. As to what the Trijicon 5-20x50

is, exactly, here are the rough details. I say “rough” because I don’t have the time or space to delve deeply into the subject of this one-of-a-kind scope. You will read more about this great shooting tool a bit later on. Equipped with amber dot and

standard cross hairs, the Trijicon var- mint AccuPoint rifl e scope is always displaying a bright, fully lighted center dot. This dot is about ¹⁄₁₆", or at 20x mag- nifi cation it covers about half the body of an adult prairie dog at 450 yards. This lighting energy source is the same sys- tem used on the military ACOG sights carried by our troops in the Middle East. The bottom line is that it won’t wear out for about 20 years. When and if it does go to sleep, you send it in and Trijicon replaces the lighting source. With tactical open adjustment tur- ret knobs, solid ¼ MOA clicks, and easy
