threads, and not only does this allow an easy barrel swap, but you also can index a barrel for optimal accuracy. With a hex-key wrench and headspace gauge, you can swap barrels in a few minutes. A few years ago I had Randy

Leger build a one-piece rest and mas- sive Shehane laminated wood stock for this action. This stock has access holes drilled in the bottom, allowing for barrel changes without removing the barreled action from the stock. Randy also drilled and tapped two new action screw holes behind the barrel clamping split, which sidesteps the issue of action fl ex when changing barrels. The action is epoxy bedded to an aluminum block inside the stock, with the front part of the action free fl oated. This prevents the bedding from being disturbed when barrels are being changed. The rifl e is designed to operate

in a free-recoil fashion: steel guide rails on the bottom of the stock track in machined Delrin guides on the rest, allowing the rifl e to return to the exact point-of-aim after every shot. Since the D-Rock tool can modify

both sporting and target ammunition, I selected two test barrels that would closely match what hunters and target shooters would have on their rifl es. The fi rst barrel is a heavy, straight

taper six-groove Green Mountain bar- rel that was originally built for a Ruger 10/22 project. I had Sheldon cut it down and re-crown for a fi nish length of 19 inches, chamber it with a PT&G Sport- ing spiral fl uted reamer, and fi t it for the 2013 action. The barrel’s internal fi nish is what I would consider to be fair; there were still some light tooling and drilling marks present. The short length of the barrel and internal fi nish is consistent with many aftermarket barrels for Ruger 10/22 rifl es, as well as other domestic sporting rifl es. The second barrel is an older

24-inch Anschutz eight-groove, heavy target barrel from a 1411 prone match rifl e. The barrel is well fi nished and uni- form inside, but it had a match chamber which made it impossible to close the bolt on the Stinger and Velocitor. Since I wanted to test the sporting ammunition in this barrel as well, I re-chambered it

with the same PT&G sporting reamer. This reamer cuts a chamber with enough room to snugly fi t sporting ammuni- tion without having excessive space or looseness. This barrel’s internal fi nish is similar to what you would fi nd on a Cooper, Anschutz, or other high-quality sporting rifl e. Both barrels were set to headspace of 0.043 inch. When shooting at the 50-yard

distance, a Leupold fi xed 35 power BR scope was used, and when testing bul- lets in the medium at 25 yards, I used a Leupold EFR 6.5-20x40 scope. TESTING MEDIUM

The testing medium for this proj-

ect is a blend of 140 temperature paraf- fi n wax and cooking oil. The ratio was formulated to keep the wax soft at warmer temperatures, but not so soft that it melts or fails to hold a shape. I molded the wax into a large 22 x 16 x 4-inch block, then cut the large block into 4 x 4 x 2½-inch to 3½-inch pieces. Each molding was checked for penetra- tion with a precision air rifl e to ensure a uniform density was maintained from molding to molding.
