of copper smear as if a bullet-bore fric- tion coefficient is formed on copper itself. One of these rifles is a Browning Safari in caliber .243 Winchester, built on a Sako action. Another is a .220 Swift older Model 70 that continues to deliver half-minute groups with a discernable glint of copper down the muzzle. Not- withstanding, copper usually will rob our bores of accuracy if we don’t get rid of it, or at least keep it to a minimum, particularly near the muzzle. Getting back to my routine …
whoops … selected procedure … of controlling copper that really simplifies things. If you have a bore scope, this will enable you to see what’s going on in the bore. If not, follow this procedure anyway. It’s good bore therapy and it is likely to help your bore, and certainly won’t hurt it. Copper is very easy to remove
from a rifle bore, but don’t rely on those regular bore cleaning solutions that claim to rid your bore of powder fouling, carbon, and copper in one fell swoop. I’ve tried most of them and it just doesn’t happen. They may work fine once your bore quits grabbing cop-
per. So, you’ll need a copper remover like Barnes CR-10 or one of the others specifically formulated to rid a bore of copper. My procedure is to introduce this stronger solution from the muzzle for a distance usually not to exceed one foot. I use a floppy nylon rod with a jag I milled into the end to hold a small, loose-fitting cloth patch. Be sure the bore is horizontal so the solution doesn’t run toward the action. Even a few degrees of downward tilt toward the muzzle is OK. Anoint the bore well with several passes with a saturated patch. Hold the mouth of the bottle under the muzzle to catch the drippings. I’ve saved this part of the proce-
dure to the end because it is important. Be sure the rifle bore is warm. Warm it to at least room temperature — warm to the touch is even better. Leave the strong copper cleaner in the bore for 12- 15 minutes only. Even under the most stubborn conditions, this should rid your bore of copper right down to clean, bare metal. Then, until such time it loses its appetite for copper, use this as part of your normal bore cleaning procedure. Following the use of a stronger copper
remover, push a cloth patch through the bore via the chamber and then pro- ceed to clean your bore with whatever solvent or brushing you normally use. You should be surprised at the outcome. I never like to think of this as
playing nursemaid to a rifle bore … it’s simply applying a sound method of bore care that has worked for me in attaining some of the best accuracy I have ever had from my rifles. By now, one might even call it a routine.
