That one-shot ability with deadly accu- racy would tend to outgun the 12 gauge pumpkin ball throwers at every turn. The recoil associated with this new
gun and paired load is no more than a light 12 gauge slug gun in a pump
variant like a short-barreled Remington 870. That is a gun I shoot and use often in the slug gun world, in the form of a Hastings Paradox rifl ed barrel. I shot the prototype Hastings Hagn gun from a benchrest prior to taking it afi eld on buffalo, and pushed 10 rounds of the 410-grain slugs out onto a 100-yard and 175-yard paper target with no strain. When hunting those buffalo I never no- ticed the recoil at all. I tend to get tunnel vision when shooting, and also tunnel mind control when concentrating on a shot on game, so heavy recoil on game is almost never an issue. That includes rounds like the .45-70, .416 Remington, .300 Win. Mag., and 7mm Rem. Mag. in a Ruger No. 1. Even the big .50 BMG in a Blue Grass Viper single-shot is not a

Questions about the ammunition and shotgun information can be directed to author: L.P. Brezny, P.O. Box 529, Piedmont, SD 57769. Phone 605-787-6321. Currently, Hastings in Clay Center, Kansas, is no longer in business. The 3½ " 20 gauge and paired ammunition are being restructured at the time of this report. Like a whole lot of other outfi ts, the current economy dealt Hastings a very severe blow.

problem when I get behind it on paper, or shooting rocks off mountain tops at long range. WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL SHOTGUN? Adding up the numbers, the new
Hastings 3½ " 20 gauge just could be the hardest-hitting slug gun ever built. For certain it is one of the most accurate, and if anything can outgun it I would like to see it fi rsthand. With its 2,000 f.p.s. muzzle velocity, and 3,600 ft/lbs of kinetic energy, when compared with the .45-70 Government we see that both guns are almost equal out to 200 yards downrange. However, when I took a sixth buffalo with my personal Sharps .45-70 rifle with the new Hornady Leverevolution 325-grain, 2,060 f.p.s. load, the 70-yard target did drop to its knees, but then got up and circled back into the herd. We had to put a second finishing round into it for recovery. That fi rst shot had gone into the neck, like the 410-grain 20 gauge slug, but I could have missed the very small kill area that brings down buffalo cleanly (3" x 3" kill zone). Because these animals were heading directly to market under the watchful eye of a USDA agent, I didn’t have any opportunity to do any wound channel examinations. In effect, what I saw was what I got in terms of bullet reaction. To my way of thinking you now
have a choice, and complaints just don’t cut it. No more whimpering about slug gun inability to get the job done. No more moaning that muzzleloaders are outgunning your 12 gauge smooth bore. There is an answer to all those problems, and that answer is the Hastings 3½ " 20 gauge slug gun. In terms of varmint applications,
the new Hastings 3½ " shotshell load system may be offered in 28 gauge and 410 gauge on down the road. What this says is hunters in Eastern states who cannot shoot centerfi re rifl es but can shoot shotguns will have an option when hunting coyotes and other larger varmints. Remember, this is a full scale shotgun, but now built with a totally new load concept and design.
