edge sharpened often. While stainless steel blades are tough as nails, when it comes time to put an edge back on them some of them could just as well be thrown away instead of trying to fi ght that very hard surface edge. With its elk antler handle and an overall length of 7.5", this knife was ideal for skinning bobcats in Oklahoma on the super successful hunt I made in 2010, plus an assortment of coyotes, raccoons, and badgers back home in the Black Hills of South Dakota. If you’re on the hunt for a good blade that can be touched up with a good sharpening tool or steel, take a look at Silver Stag knives. While on the subject of knives, one brand I have known
well since the 1960s is the Puma line of hunting knives. I carried a Puma White Hunter for years until it became so valuable as a collector item that it has long since been put away in my gun vault. Yes, if you own an old Puma, hang on to it because it has increased in value. This past fall I fi eld dressed and skinned no fewer than
three antelope and fi ve white-tail with a new introduction by the Puma line. This blade is dubbed Fox Stag. Unless no one has guessed as yet, I’m a sucker for a stag horn handle. However, the Puma is more than good looking. This small knife with a 4" blade is made of a harder stainless steel than a carbon blade. When I took ownership of the Puma Fox Stag I also moved to the new 21st century rendition of the original Puma White Hunter. In this case we have a new blade design, 5" long and stainless steel. So far I have not found work for the longer blade, but
when an elk falls, or a young buffalo, that could change. Regardless of your taste in blades, and there are as many
out there as the folks who carry them, if you’re in the market for a different knife these examples may just fi t your needs. If you carry a knife, you need something to keep it
sharp. One tool that serves well goes by the name EZE LAP, using diamond dust bonded to a sharpening stone. This outfi t will put an edge on many types of steel. With a well- made folding handle that swings out into a double handle, and a single fl at stone 3½" long, the system can be packed in to an area with fi eld knives, assuring that everything can be dressed out and the blades will remain sharp. Each spring I make a Canadian fi shing trip with friends and I’m elected to do all the fi sh processing for a nine-man outfi t each day. “Why?” you ask. Because I use my own special knives, carry sharpening equipment to maintain a good edge, and never leave bones in the fi llets. About the only thing I can think of that is more useless than a motor that won’t run, or a gun that won’t fi re, is a dull knife. SCOPE WARS
Where did they all come from? I know I have written
this before, but it bears repeating. We never have had it so good in terms of “stuff’ for American outdoorsmen. However, with all that “stuff” in its present numbers comes confusion, and that is a part of the story when taking a look at the current state of the glass sight department. Scope sights are numerous and they come in all grades regarding quality and function. I have decided to bring a number of these together as a group to save space and time in the review department. In all cases the scopes were in hand, mounted, and shot on test rifl es. No “out-of-the-box” desktop review here.
