As you work to open areas, remember to be quiet or you could give up the gig on your plans to any nearby coyote. Don’t forget that those small sap-
lings ahead of your site can be closer than you think, and will stop a rifl e’s movement when you least need the problem. If you don’t have a clear shot ahead, or cannot move freely, then re- locate to another site. 4) MAKING THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT The fourth sin: announcing to
the coyote world that you are going hunting! I have been fortunate to hunt varmints and coyotes from coast to coast, and I’m still amazed at how some hunters become lax as they begin the hunt at the vehicle. Those otherwise astute hunters slam metal doors, talk boisterously, toss hard gun cases into the back of truck beds with a distinct clang, and close the metal lids to tool chests with a resounding ring (SLAM). But then those hunters wonder why they don’t get more coyotes. It’s because on a crisp, calm winter morning, loud noises travel through the air much like a cough during a tranquil symphony concert. Coyotes are out there, and they are listening. Don’t announce that you are there to hunt. If you are going hunting and need
some time to get organized, clothed, or packed, stop down the road at a rest area, gas station, or other site far away from where you’ll park and start hunt- ing. After parking near a hunting site, cautiously uncase your fi rearms and quietly store the cases. Next, gently nudge the vehicle door closed once you’re ready to step away. Metal to metal contact will sound off, so move slowly and with purpose. I once hunted with a hunter who
pushed the automatic door lock on his vehicle key ring until the vehicle horn blew. He said he was satisfied then that it was locked. We never saw any coyotes when he made that annoying noise. I started driving my truck when we hunted together, and I quietly locked my vehicle with the key.
