also is a fi ne fur buster or turkey taker. Jeff Foiles has had a following in the waterfowl call department for many years, but has now decided to move into the choke development area. The big news about this tube is that, like the Dead Ringer and Hevi-Shot tubes, it too has a ring system that strips the wad, or at least stabilizes it upon exiting the muzzle. This past year I was asked to evaluate no fewer than

15 new aftermarket choke tubes by a leading shotgun-based publication. It was during this undertaking that I became clearly aware of the fact that even with one big pile of choke tube systems out there today, the list is ever expanding … much like the universe itself. Payload control is an ongoing development in shotgunning, so by staying tuned to what’s coming at you it is possible to stay one step ahead of the game when searching for quality patterns against crows, coyotes, skunks, or other critters that require some population control. BIG GUNS: NEW .50 BMG INTRODUCTIONS

In the super heavies department several new .50s have

surfaced of late, and this market is not relegated to just a cho- sen few any longer. While I will review the .50 in a separate article on down the line as an update in equipment, for now it is safe to say that as I start testing new super rifl es like the Noreen custom “Only Long Range” single-shot .50 BMG out of Belgrade, Montana, and the new Super single-shot .50 by Steyr, we will see additional options when thinking about possibly turning to these ultra-long-range super rifl es. Built as single-shots because of the lack of autoloading

need by the civilian market, and at a considerable reduction in price, both the Noreen .50 caliber rifl e and the Steyr are turning out to be very effective long-range target, and even prairie dog, shooters. Shooting the .50 BMG can be classed as an experience not soon to be forgotten by the guy or lady behind the butt stock. If you want additional info on both rifl es, contact www.thegunroom.com, or www.steyr.mann- licher.com.

KIMBER 84M MONTANA IN .204 RUGER This rifl e was around my offi ce for some time waiting

for some dedicated work with the .204 Ruger. Paper shooting with the rifl e indicated it was a tack driver, but getting the sweet little Model 70-style turn bolt into the fi eld required some workable weather, targets above ground, and available time. I already had a dozen or so projects going on around here at the same time. The 84M Montana is a Kimber that has been designed

for a backpack hunter, walking varmint shooter, or any place or situation that demands a reduction in weight, but also won’t allow any compromise in accuracy or function. This is a sweet little rifl e dressed in a weather-fi ghting stainless steel fi nish, and tough element-resistant synthetic stock. Shooting Hornady 34-grain V-Max bullets from the test

rifl e, I descended upon our local prairie dog town and paid the grass rats a short visit with the silver and gray gun. Shoot- ing from a Big Shooter bench in the back of my 4x4, the little rifl e gave a solid account of itself in terms of accuracy when shooting under low wind conditions, and keeping the shots inside 300 yards. Over the course of several months, running from early fall to spring, the rifl e took turkey, prairie dogs, and a fox. These are reasonable targets for the .204 Ruger and the Kimber Montana, topped with a Simmons 44 Mag 3-10x44 scope with Truplex reticle. This test scope proved itself in the
