It seems there is hope, after all. Judy Buranich quietly taught English at a High School in Middleburg, Pennsylvania, for nearly 25 years until April - when parents and students discovered that she had a second life as an author. Writing under the name of Judy Mays, her ‘adult’ titles featured aliens, vampires and werewolves and were published by Ellora’s Cave Publishing. The disgruntled parents, armed with this knowledge, did what all 21st century parents would do - they went to the media and outed her. The local TV station ran the story on the five o’clock news, and repeated it every half hour for the rest of the night.
One woman said in the news report: “’I thought she was a top-of-the-line teacher. It’s unethical, totally unacceptable. Period.” Another added: “She is teaching children that are under the age of 18 and definitely the books that she is writing are adult books. I think she needs to make a decision as to what she wants to do. Either be a school teacher or author.”
The story spread around the world [“Parents’ shock as quiet English teacher turns out to be racy erotica author Judy Mays” was the Daily Mail headline] but the story had a happy ending, as Judy Buranich explained to the Publishers Weekly blog in May: “The entire fiasco backfired on the parents who complained. The support I have received from around the world has been unbelievable. Two complete strangers started a support page for me and, the last time I checked, it had over 9,000 ‘like’ hits. However, it’s been the support from my current students, many, many former students, and their parents that has humbled me and warmed my heart.”
She added that she would not lose her teaching job - and that her book sales would probably go up too.
