Rapid growth predicted for pleasure sector
Hewson Group has announced the release of the latest version of its research report ‘Women Sex and Shopping’. It argues that the market for pleasure products should reach $60bn-$100bn (worldwide) - Hewson estimates it is currently worth $8bn - as it becomes a mainstream retail category.
The report also suggests that one in three women under 65 in the UK, Northern Europe and North America regularly use sex toys, and that this figure will ‘massively increase’ over the coming decade as product design improves and emerging economies embrace what Hewson labels ‘women’s pleasure goods’ - a grouping that includes lingerie, lubricants, healthcare, luxury leather goods, bath and bedroom goods, media and art as well as sex toys.
“The market in erotic goods specifically for women has existed for barely more than a decade but already we can see that there is a key and very valuable type of product that around half of all women are going to regard as important on many levels and will buy regularly over the course of their lifetime,” said Judy Pearce, Hewson Group’s research director. “No marketer should be blind to the fact that there is a powerful confluence of increasing financial power amongst women as consumers and increasing control over their own sexuality.” She continued: “We are
starting to see the very best stores and online sites for women recognising that women want exciting environments in which to shop for a broad range of goods. Things are going to change fast now but it’s fairly obvious that the chief inhibitor in most markets is a frankly, sleazy aesthetic that grew out of the old adult industry and which does not speak to today’s woman shopper.” ‘Women Sex and Shopping’ is available via quarterly subscription and it now includes the top 50 High Street sex shops for women, the top 50 online sex shops for women and the top 50 erotic products for women - as judged by a panel of experts from women’s retailing, digital media and customer services.
