Last month’s events seem to suggest that size is no longer the safety net it was once thought to be, at least as far as retail is concerned. First there was Mothercare announcing that it would be closing 110 stores and then Focus DIY was forced to call in administrators, with the majority of its stores expected to close. These events came after another national chain, Oddbins, slipped into administration the previous month.
Even the government is getting concerned now. It has appointed Mary Portas, the star of TV shows ‘Secret Shopper’ and ‘Mary Queen of Shops’, to lead a government review on how to boost trading on the High Street.
Without wishing to be insensitive though, something Oddbins, Mothercare and Focus DIY all had (and have) in common was that their offerings were (and are) a little dated. Like Woolworth’s and MFI, their stores seemed to be more at home in the last century than this one. But being big chains they could not easily or quickly reinvent themselves for a changing marketplace.
Adult retail can sometimes be an insular business. As Paul Smith put it, when your windows have to be boarded over to stop people looking in, there’s a danger you’ll also stop looking out. But most adult businesses are pretty nimble and they are changing with the times, as we have seen in our three-part Adult Retailing 2011 series, which concludes in this issue. Like the two previous instalments, the third part should be essential reading material for anyone with an interest in adult retail.
And something else I would suggest is essential for anyone with an interest in adult retail is a visit to this month’s ETO Show, which takes place on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th June at the NEC in the midlands. You’ll find all the industry’s major distributors, a wide variety of specialist suppliers, plenty of new products to see and special offers to save you money. And it won’t cost you a penny to get in.
Everything you need to know about the Show can be found in this issue or you can visit
www.etoshow.com for more details.
I hope to see you there. Dale Bradford, Editor
