Sport to ‘celebrate’ adult market

The Sunday Sport newspaper returned to the newsstands in May and the new owners’ intention is for it to once again be a marketing tool for the UK adult industry by directing its editorial ‘back to basics’ - sport, sex and fun.

filled its niche and that’s where we want it to be. We’ve brought it back to basics - a combination of sport, sex and fun. We aim to entertain and amuse and sex is the most essential ingredient. Under the last regime that side of the paper

WOW-WI TO LAUNCH THIS MONTH

This month sees the launch of a new sex toy called Wow-Wi. Aimed at men, women and couples, it is the first product from a new company called Feelgood 2. The Wow-Wi has

Sunday Sport (2011) Ltd purchased

the assets of the newspaper from the administrators in April and the three shareholders are David Sullivan, Mark Harris and Sunday Sport editor Nick Appleyard. Mark Harris, MD of the new company, first worked for the Sunday Sport in 1986 and was editor from 1997 to 2001.

He told ETO: “We’ve been able to re-

employ a number of the staff. We have eight full-time in Manchester and lots of contributors. They’re all people who worked for the old company. We’ve had three issues out to this point and I’m just waiting for circulation numbers on the most recent. We came back with 53,000 - which is more-or-less where the paper was when it folded - we upped that to 58,000 the following week so I’d like to see 60,000 now.” Outlining plans for the new Sunday Sport Harris said: “We’re very aware that over the last four-ish years - the SMG PLC era - that the powers-that-be lost sight of what the paper was all about and what its strengths were. As a marketing tool for the adult industry it

became an embarrassment and ultimately, that’s why it paid the price. Our feeling is the adult industry is something to be celebrated, not swept under the carpet.” He continued: “We’ve been

rebuilding bridges with advertisers, which has gone really well because the paper’s a unique way for them to market their products and services. Those revenues are up on what we budgeted for and we’re now offering advertisers design services too, rather than just saying ‘give us your ad and your money and we’ll stick it in the paper for you’. By making it more of a team effort we’re building that relationship with both readers and advertisers.”

The last issue published before the

newspaper went into administration on April 1st was 48 pages. It was re- launched with 64 and it is expected to reach 72 pages in the coming weeks and months: “At 48 pages it was skinny,” said Harris. “At 64 it’s worth the money [£1] and there’s no one else out there doing what we do.”

taken six years to develop - and reportedly cost six figures -and it is the creation of Rob Stephenson. He told ETO: “There are sex toys available that can accommodate men and women together but most are cumbersome, heavy and very expensive. Wow-Wi is very compact and incorporates modern technology in that it is rechargeable and it uses an infrared remote control. It also has a counter reactive force built in so whether it’s held in the hand or used hands-free it steadies itself against the body. One Wow-Wi can be shared between each

couple by simply changing the attachments...for those who have ever fantasised about a threesome, the Wow- Wi is a perfect alternative.” The Wow-Wi has a suggested retail
