was again calm, with each masthead fly in the marina pointing a unique wind direction. The race committee delayed the mornings racing. Once the Postponement flag was dropped, the boat parade, more impressive by numbers than day one, set out to the Sound. Three courses were set to manage the additional boat classes. The near shore breeze in Shilshole bay again proved enticing to the small boat fleets, only to vary and shift throughout the day.

Going into day two, many of the

keelboat classes were tied for podium positions. Among the J/24 fleet there

was a 3-way tie for second. Chris Carden aboard Scott Milne’s J/24 Tremendous Slouch noted that all three boats tied for second were only one point away from first place. In one-design racing the tie for podium means three things for a crew. First of all, winning the start is critical. By winning the start you get ahead of the competition and into clear air. Secondly, as Aaron Bronson aboard Jon Weil’s J/105 Sambal put it so clearly “clear air is king”. Having clear air allows you the potential for great boat speed as your competition sails in the disturbed air of the fleet. Third and most important is covering your competition.

Covering your competition gives you the opportunity to pass and even hold the competition from passing you. On the most southerly Shilshole

course, the Vanguard 15 fleet, with the largest fleet of 31 boats, had their fair share of starts with six races. The crew of the Vanguard 15 #1 skippered by Andrew Nelson, mentioned that the challenge of racing in such a large fleet was finding a favorable fleet position. The Vanguard 15 fleet also proved to be the most challenging for the race committee to manage due to the numbers. The Snipe fleet with six boats, found themselves in the mix working hard to focus crew
