Stay 200 Yards Away From Whales!

New federal rules to protect

endangered Puget Sound killer whales went into effect in May. The rules include a requirement that all recreational vessels, including whale watching boats and kayaks, stay twice as far away as previously required - 200 yards instead of 100 yards. Government and research vessels, commercial fishing boats and cargo vessels traveling in established shipping lanes are exempt. NOAA Fisheries said the rules safeguard orcas, which depend on sophisticated sonar to navigate and forage for food.

“Locking Through“ Free “Locking Through” classes are

offered at the Chittenden Locks Visitor Center now through September on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 7:00 pm. If you're planning a trip through

the Chittenden Locks in Ballard, be sure you have the necessary equipment on board: • two or more 50-foot mooring lines with an eye (bow and stern)

• fenders for both side of your vessel • personal flotation devices for all aboard

• fire extinguishing equipment It is also critical that you have

enough people to control your boat and watch and handle your lines, during your passage through the locks. Be alert, and if you need help, ask. The Corps offers a free brochure

called, “Guide for Boaters,” which explains all the in's and out's of locking through. You can also view helpful videos at http://go.usa.gov/3JZ
